@LABCAT said in Black Caps v Pakistan:

Peter Williams relaying a conversation with ICC chairman, ex NZC chairman, stating that we lose 100 grand for every test.
T20 earns, but tests cost too much - 6 tests at home and we're in the hole more than half a million.

    Reality sucks !

I think it is closer to a million per test NZC is losing, unless the test is against one of the big three.

Just repeating Peter Williams on the radio today. He said 100k

According to an article in The Telegraph written by a UK journo Tim Wigmore, that was in my local newspaper, NZC loses $830,000 per test if we aren't playing Aust, India or England. So what @LABCAT said.

Pakistan has 43 players and coaches/support staff in NZ with the Shaheens (Pakistan A) also playing matches. The accommodation and travel costs must be significant.

    Good info.

I'd still like to see the maths though.

How do they work out the tv rights worth etc. Is that included in this figure? Or just the attendance etc. What about day-night tests etc.

Actually seemed better test crowds than usual this year. Boxing Day at the Mount makes a big difference. Now got Mount, Chch and Wellington getting good crowds at good ovals. Hamilton still lets us down and must bleed plenty of cash . An oval at Auckland would be a game changer.

The original article was behind a paywall but I have found the Stuff article. Wigmore is very complimentary to NZ, and the majority of his article is more about doing more with less (money).

Part of the reason for the large financial loss in tests outside of playing the big 3 will be the income derived from TV broadcasting. Compare what India will pay to the Pakistan broadcaster.

Just as well it's a while to the next test, CDG might struggle to regain his place otherwise. I thought we were in good shape when we suddenly got Neesham and Corey Anderson at the same time, but Mitchell, CDG and Jamieson have come along since then, and Neesham is still around and wreaking havoc in shorter forms.

Meanwhile, Nicholls and Latham have really settled in, Watling is fantastic and Southee, Boult and Wagner are amazing, so we've got a batting line up and bowling line up where new guys aren't under pressure to deliver because the team is stacked to the rafters, and they are responding by being able to play more freely, and we can take time to develop them.

Imagine you're a new cap going into that dressing room, and you've Kane for technique, Latham and Nicholls for a newer perspective and Ross Taylor with all the experience. Watling knows his way round a bat and is one of the world's best at batting with the tail, so can share that as well.

Have to roll the arm over? No problems, Southee, Boult and Wagner will take you under their wing and show you all the tricks.

Someone having a tough patch? No problem, the team will deliver. Am I worried about Taylor and Boult's current form? A bit, but the rest of the team is delivering currently, and when Nicholls and Southee are having a lean patch, I'm sure Taylor and Boult will be firing again.

I know we're not quite that good, but this reminds me of the Aussie teams under Waugh and Ponting - just an absolute conveyor belt of talent waiting in the wings.

I thought either Anderson or the Neesh had the goods to challenge Stokes for most overrated all rounder but I can’t see either playing a test soon....possibly ever.

The Bobs and Vagene crowd can go fuck themselves. They don’t have a god given right to the best batsmen in the world and they should recognise the little master for what he is. 11 out of his 24 test tons have been scored overseas so their broken English retarded comments that he β€˜only scores at home’ are utter bullshit, at one stage this was 11 out of 19 so I think he can be forgiven for plundering a few runs in his own backyard.

It's absolutely glorious, I'm having a ball chiming in with comments like "Kane is obviously a class above Kohli in tests" just for good measure.

Is it time to think about giving Kyle the new ball and dropping Boult or Southee to three?

Think about it, coz hes that impressive, but it's a no from me. I think the sum of all parts is better with threats from 3rd and 4th seamers (Jamieson and Wagner), as well as openers.

Matt Henry is proof that slotting in random opening swing bowlers as 3rd or 4th seamer doesnt work.

It's just crazy that Kyle has such a good record already and hasn't bowled with the new ball yet once.

Aussies don't mind bowling the best in the world at first drop so I too think we leave it as it is. Horrible feeling as a batsman seeing off the openers only to look up and have more of a threat marking his run up πŸ™‚

Not sure if anyone watched the lunch break, but they had a question and answer thingy with Fleming and McMillan. Someone asked Fleming what is the one thing he would have liked to have known prior to playing test cricket. His answer was he wished he had learnt how to convert 50s into 100s.

Both he and McMillan pointed out that they were able to progress through the ranks without being taught to score 100s. 70s and 80s were enough. It's good to see there is an awareness of this in NZ cricket now. I grew up playing with and against these guys and it always bothered me that they were never held to account when when they got out at bad times. I witnessed a number of those middling scores from both of them, and others, and nobody got up them for it. Compare that to rugby where the young hotshots were brought back down to earth if they did something stupid on the field.

Score 30 more runs. Next question.

No one didn't convert 50s into 100s quite like Fleming.

In saying that he was still in the convo for our best ever team til KW and Rossco emerged.

Nothing of our Kane reaching 200. Got Mitchell's 50 though, but not his hundred πŸ™„

Pakistan's woeful catching has inflated the batting stats of a number of our players including Kane. Sub standard for a test side. All those wicket no balls as well. We took full advantage though

I've only seen little of this and the last test but have had to switch it on mute each time he steps into the comms box. Cricket is one of those sports where you just can't have "generalist" commentators. It's too long and there's too much speaking time for them to demonstrate just how little they know about the game.

Nothing of our Kane reaching 200. Got Mitchell's 50 though, but not his hundred πŸ™„

Yeah, I just watched that. WTF was the complier thinking?? Williamson double ton and Mitchell ton / declaration are obvious highlights!

Not heard Sumo in a while, and honestly, it wasn't long enough. He's not the voice of cricket. On Kane's wicket ...

"Daryl Mitchell! .... looks on as Kane ....."

I've only seen little of this and the last test but have had to switch it on mute each time he steps into the comms box. Cricket is one of those sports where you just can't have "generalist" commentators. It's too long and there's too much speaking time for them to demonstrate just how little they know about the game.

At one point Kane hit a square drive and he said "Kane cutting..."

I like Sumo but agree you need a level of expertise to he able to commentate a test.

@No-Quarter I'm not as much of a fan as I used to be but I definitely know I prefer him in smaller doses now. He doesn't seem comfortable with those quieter patches of commentary and tries to force fill it with banter. Twice heard him drop a random 'intellectual' word into his comms and the other person has gone ummmmm. Just makes him come across as a bit of a piston wristed gibbon tbh.

ha ha I am also still very salty about Radiosport dying so Sumo is probably coping some of that.

Yep, Doull can be funny but serious when he needs to be and nicely self effacing about his career ( which was actually pretty decent all up )

I'd luke to see Kylo open up this morning. He looked brutal yesterday.

Sorry Boult my original mancrush but I think you have been overtaken for the time being.

I think I would have either watched or listened to 80% of the summer"s cricket. I think commentary has been fine, and if anything is getting better as the season goes on.
