Things I learned driving back up the coast

The Bruce Highway is the worst major highway in Western civilisation. It's fucking deplorable. Made worse by floods causing potholes. But the stretch of Rocky to Ayr is some 3rd world post apocalyptic shit.

There are maybe half a dozen creek names in Qld, and they just rotate them
    6 mile Creek
    4 mile Creek
    8 mile Creek
    Saltwater Creek
    Rocky creek
    Emu Creek

    Queensland is fuck off big

Probably still better than any suburban Sydney road, can't complain about city slickers in 4wd's when they have to drive on NSW roads.

What happened to the driving thread?

Yeah I remember seeing it was locked but just assumed as BSG was no longer here and it probably wasn't a winger type thread that it can't have been because of a shitfight.

Must have been well drunk to think it was because it reached it's useful end.

Oh, BTW... to complete the story of my new set of tyres... I got a nail bang in the middle of the rear one coming down Route 52 yesterday.
Luckily, a slow leak, so I spent a lot of time swearing at the road-conditions, then the wind, then maybe my paranoid mind, then eventually - realising that my tyre really was flat-as-shit - the absolutely shit road-maintenance north of Pongaroa. But managed to inflate it at each town, make it over the hill, and park up safely in Wellington.

And then a little later, discover a broken bottle of red wine in my luggage, to cap off the day.
(Discovered via picking up said luggage, and noticing the stains in the lounge carpet. And then the stains in the apartment building hallway, leading all the way from street to my door)

The last couple of days has seemed like a series of clues from the big imaginary guy in the sky whispering "... nah man, just, like, keep going - unemployed, riding around on your motorbike, drinking expensive craft beer... I'll make it work out somehow in the end... fuck having an apartment or house or job or whatever, just... hakuna matata"

Many much Alligator Creeks too. Proving Australians are pretty ordinary zoologists. (Did, like you, notice the lack of diversity in creek naming.)

Interesting that part of that Rocky to Ayr stretch was 110kph. What got me is the sign advising of a rest area 42km away ...

We escaped just before most of the big rain hit so managed to avoid too much rain damage, and Jr managed to narrowly miss the blokes throwing cold mix at the potholes.

Regarding bigness, when I start to think the last leg from Rocky at 4 and a half hours is "basically home" you get an appreciation. And that's disregarding all the bits to the left of the map.

@booboo yep, once we hit Townsville I think we're basically home

12 hours yesterday and 9 today. And that's from Noosa let alone the GC.

Probably the last time we'll do this one.

@mariner4life its not high on my list to repeat any time soon.

Kind of enjoyed the experience though.

But @MajorRage 's suggestion of a flying machine has merit.

Where was your waypoint? Ayr (as mentioned above)? I can hardly remember which town that is ... Not being familiar they all seem to blend into themselves and I can't work out which town we went through in what order, or where we stopped etc ...

That's two pretty hefty days of travel, though. Thought Noosa was a short leg (about 3 hours from GC?) leaving you some decent travel days to get home. Enjoy the beer - always good after a long drive.

From what I've been reading about though, the knee-jerk reaction of Aus politicians to small Covid outbreaks, does add a fair bit of risk to using these new fan dangled flying machines. Chances of being stuck seem quite high.

All in all (this year anyway), right decision is probably to drive.

Its drive, but also to keep the family together if going interstate. Its amazing how quick state premiers have been to slam a border shut, so you also need to be prepared to not be able to get home if you risk crossing borders.

    Weird times.

    Nah we stopped in Mackay.

We weren't taking the risk of leaving the state. And even then we were close to being caught in a Lockdown

    Travel! It's back!!!

Well, sort of. Gotta start somewhere.

NZ for a long w/e in a couple of weeks.

Then Cairns/Port/Daintree in June with the fam - who has the oil on the must-do's in that neighbourhood? @mariner4life you must have some ideas? @booboo you were there recently?

Will do a day on the reef from Port, what else should we do with the pre-teen kids?
