I do think that a lot of what he writes is his justification for his statement. That is “from a certain point of view “.
However I have also never really understood why people cream themselves over ESB when SW itself was the amazing game changer that kicked everything off and the whole concept of reinventing matinee type movies is the very thing that Mando has returned to and been a winner.
SW was mind blowing at the time. ESB just continued things.
Yep, I agree that ESB is overrated.

    Compared to what ?

    Other SW movie ratings.
For some reason it is often rated as the best rather than the second best.

Well it’s rated the best cos people think it is. I’m not sure how this is confusing.

That’s right. They are the ones overrating it.

In simple terms Star Wars is awesome. ESB is even awesomer and ROTJ is awesome but it’s level is somewhere in and around the first two.

Any SW fan that thinks ESB is ‘overrated’ is a goon.

ESB is easily the best Star Wars film, better dialogue, better direction and a just a better made film. It’s pretty much the template on how a sequel can make the first film better.

And that takes nothing away from SW, which was the gamechanger that started it all

As has been mentioned on another thread most masterpieces are followed up with sequels of rapidly decreasing quality ( Dirty Harry and Jaws are brilliant examples ) but SW, Alien and Terminator bucked the trend. Also Clints "Dollars" trilogy started well and just got better and better to be fair.

Return of the Jedi is a bit of a tough one. I mean it's firmly rooted in the top three naturally, but how close it ranks depends on my mood. It's a fucken brilliant conclusion, yet the sequel trilogy almost tarnishes it ( but then again Mando has sorted Boba Fetts reputation ) so I'm interested to hear others views ? the Jabba scenes are great fun, space battle fucken rocks and there's genuine emotion with the Luke/Vader scenes....but then the Ewoks irk me, Palpatine getting taken out relatively easily for such a powerful being........

It’s my favourite. Probably because it’s the only one of the originals I saw at the cinema but I also love the action and the way it concluded the trilogy. I particularly liked the 3 concurrent battles (space battle, Endor battle and Luke vs Vader. Add in other cool shit like Jabba, Admiral Akbar (RIP) and of course seeing Vader’s face (which was amazing watching as a 4 year old) and you have a damn fine film. Don’t even mind the ewoks. I guess there was something for everyone in that film.

I hear all that. I went to it at the movies in Nelson, first one I saw and my poor old Grandma had to take me on a friday ( last day before School holidays if I remember rightly ). No idea what was going on but I just went with the flow and fucken loved it.

Admiral Akbars fate in TLJ after what he did for the rebellion basically shit all over the good work here. It shoulda been him ramming that ship as opposed to a purple headed lesbo just there to appease minorites.

yeah...the whole immaculate birth storyline...should just be forgotten...we're just supposed to believe no one did any research into it?...they just accepted it? I believe the comics have retonned this so the Palpatine played a role in creating Anakin...still weird

Can’t the prequels and sequels just get along...

For the record, I don’t dislike any of the movies. Some I watch more than others but when it comes to Star Wars I’ve learned to just roll with the punches.

Balanced opinions are tolerated. It is opinions based on knowledge and fact that are frowned upon.

Difficult to roll with a massive kick to the scrotum.
