The thing I'll find interesting is if it does start to get close, then how will Paine adjust. I'd go the Baz route attacking until the end (unless they're only a couple of overs left and India have 5 or so wickets in hand). But if they're scoring freely the pressure to defend will be immense. And bowling defensively might be rewarding if India can taste victory and take risks to force the result.

In fairness to Warne - Lyon is bowling some rubbish.

Cummins has Pujara looking a bit gun shy.

Cummins, meanwhile, is finding Pujara's head with regularity

Advantage India. Will need to be a couple of great sessions' bowling from here

Really not convinced - you can bowl negative lines with negative fields in Tests easily, and pick up wickets if people start hitting out.

The bigger risk for me is the sheer number of overs catch up with the Aussie bowlers, and one or more breaks down. Still 62 overs to go todya, there will be some tired bodies out there.

Pujara is unflappable though. If he’s there with Gill to help get him to a century (jinx alert), then Gill and possibly Pant to come in and really push for the 240+ still needed.

Lunch comes just in time for Pujara. I think he needs a break to settle - was starting to look like a wicket.

He's dawdled a bit to allow Oz to continue to attack.

Imagine if Rohit had stayed in and bowled along at a similar rate to Gill. Indians would be well on the way to winning.

i don't see India winning from here. But they have gone a long way towards saving it. These two get to drinks and they will start to feel pretty good.

My theory on 5th days is that you can realistically expect to get an extra wicket each season - so 1 in the first means 2 in the second and 3 in the third.

India probably aren't thinking about the win yet, but it's got to start creeping into their minds soon. If they're still 1 down at drinks in the next session then I think we'll see some acceleration. The probably need 100-125 runs from the session to be a realistic chance in the final session.

@Cyclops india need 4 an over from here - which is massively quick in the context of the match and the series.

Honestly, if I were them, I'd bat the draw out, hold the trophy and head home happy given the injuries and lack of Kohli here.

I can remember watching the Black Caps trying to do that a decade or so back and it didn't work as well as the commentators had been selling it. Wasn't a vintage attack though - probably Tuffey et al. 🙂

Cummins and Hazelwood likely to be a different story, though they'll be tiring and bowling in the 130s.

If India need 150 off 30 overs with 7 or 8 wickets in hand, I reckon it could still be interesting. If Gill and Pant bat a lot of the next session they might need a bit less than that!

Yeah draw the favourite for sure. But if they're still 1 down an hour into the next session and the lead is under 200 then I think they start to think about it.

If these two can bat for most of the session and Gill has most of the strike, then I’d be bringing in Pant next and that could get the Aussies a bit nervy and put their bowlers under pressure.

@ACT-Crusader I'd bring Pant in next, now regardless - and possibly followed by Sundar and Thakur.

Try and keep Rahane and Agarwal to shut up shop at the end if necessary.

@nzzp I think all three options are still on the table.

My concern is that our bowlers aren't able to draw the false shot because the short ball plan is in place.
