Tuning in late to this series, and instantly remembered that it pays not to think too much about Am Cup rules. Quite how Dean Barker is the best helmsman the USA has to offer, and that Italian Jimmy Spithill.

What max speeds are they hitting? I had a quick look on TVNZ on demand and saw 50knots for USA in race 1.

At approx 18 million NZD per race, you'd hope so! I coulda brought and paid for a life time of Hawk flights for that

By my calculations, if it was about 25deg out there, LSS was about 662kts, they were close to mach .08 at 53 knots. Fast for a boat, but yes very expensive compared to a Hawk in dollars per mach number. Hawk is mid point eights straight and level like an A330 I think?

Cost aside, I think I would rather have a go in the boat.

Not sure that they will race. The met service has it at 7kph, so well under the 6 knot limit. Forecast is for it to fill in a bit by 3pm. Might end up being a displacement race. No idea how that might pan out or whether they can get around the course in time (doubtful).
