England will have a few key players back for the 3rd test, although there does seem to be some rotation of players.

Worth remembering if England do make it to the final, we play them in two dead (?) Tests from June 2 which will be quite a quirk

Are those games before or after the WTC final?

That makes the next pitch surface interesting.

The last tests you could see the new ball being progressively scuffed up basically each ball.

The pink ball tests in Aus, NZ, and England have such a dramatic effect because the ball doesn't get a hard time on the wicket, block and outfield.

It'll be interesting to see how the ball holds up on subcontinent surfaces

I'm a bit preoccupied. So if England don't make it we get a 2 match warm up series? Nice

Both NZ and England will likely be missing players due to IPL commitments for that series.

What about India? How many of their players will be tied up? A fair few I'd imagine

I mean for the NZ-England tests before the WTC final.

@No-Quarter If each match is a 50-50 proposition then Oz still have three cards, India two and England one.

no way 50/50 in India. The last pitch was turning square on Day 1. I think it's going to be 3-1 or 2-2; can't see a draw.

I'd say India are red hot favourites, and then Australia. Can't see England winning two on the bounce - but who knows in these crazy times!

Yeah - I think England's card has been burned and put in an urn - but, you never know.

You'd think India are red hot favorites, but the cricketing gods like to fuck with us NZers.

You just know the poms are going to win both tosses, flounder a win somewhere and let the fucking Australians in the back door!

Poms generally love Australians in the back door.

You say that but if it comes true it's you lot that will be getting it in the rear from Aus...

So it turns out that night test cricket in India gives you no more than 10 overs of Starc type excitement and then spinning on a dustbowl resumes.

England have basically 10 overs to share amongst Anderson, Broad, and Archer. Leach the only full-time spinner. India went with Ishant and Bumrah only, which really surprised me, until half an hour into it.

England batting, lost the 2 quick but a remarkable half century by Crawley, all class and a lightening outfield will mean quick runs. But the spinning jaffas are coming thick and fast.
All over on the 4th day or before I'm thinking. Be a good run rate though
    74 for 3 off 22

Start imagining us versus India at Lords on June 18

@siam Crawley batting on a different pitch, he's played brilliantly at least till his LBW scare

@siam and all out for 112. 6 for Axar Patel, 3 for Ravi Ashwin.

England lost 8/40 odd ... a massive collapse. Would have been good to see it, but day/night cricket in india is poor for NZ. The regular day tests are far better suited to our timezones!

The WTC has done its job. Every test match means something - this was an absolutely pivotal game that I went out of my way to find the score for.

So assuming that India win this test from this strong position that would mean that England are out of WTC contention and the only way Oz qualify is if England win the last test.
India keeps their two qualifying options (3-1, 2-1) and Oz loses all options except 2-2.

I fancy our chances against India at Lords.

That's an Indian side that lost every toss in Australia, but won the series. Right now they are smashing the English at home, so much so that the outstanding Root batting effort in Test 1 is forgotten. They haven't got past 200 since.

I think we'll have a fighting chance against them, but I don't fancy our chances. We'll be underdogs, and rightfully so. That said, Australia seem to have the wood on us more recently, so I agree - I'd rather face India. It will be a hell of a game no matter what.
