wonder what Reiko said to Laumape early on, Laumape kept mouthing something and giving the old nod for a good 30 sec after.

Not keeping your cool after some verbals is another tick in not ready for Test match column

    You're talking about Reiko right?

It was Reiko (or Rieko) that lost his cool a bit. Laumape was smiling about it (if its the same incident). But far from anything signifiant

Point is, they're both hotheads but only one of them is commonly involved in scuffles/exchanges and it's not Mr Dusrispeck. Pretty ridiculous to try and say that makes Laumape not ready for test rugby...

Agree. And he will never live that down (Mr Dusrispeck). I assume he mean't that people were criticizing him on the rugby field and this was his reply.

But hes not a hothead. Far from it. Perenara yes. Coles as well. Rieko maybe. But not Laumape/

The second Hansen era was mostly a disaster, but perhaps the weirdest thing about it was the regular selection of Fifita, a player who at best had all the flaws that Ioane was criticised for, when Hansen wouldn't have a bar of Akira Ioane - who was always significantly better than Fifita.

The psychology and failings of Hansen were really strange.

Not a Fifita fan by any means, but to be fair he probably was ahead of Akira because he covered lock. As for Akira, I have been a huge crtic, was pleased with what he did last year, and stoked he seems to be keeping it up this year, and we seemingly starting to see what he is capable of. Still makes no difference to past years, he wasn't near international standard then, even he says he was pretty crap in head. I always though he used to play like someone who ran over kids at 1st 15 level and thought that's all he had to do, spmeone has helped him turn corner.

I will say after my last post, I am beginning to worry about Laumape, I know I had discussion with someone on here about him, and saying he shouldn't need to be disrespected to get stuck in, he seemed a little lost again, I hope he not going a little like Akira was, thinking an occasional big game is good enough?

I had high hopes for Laumape - you can't see many 12s around with his physical attributes. Could use some coaching in passing though.

Seriously, though, who are the contenders? THey don't look dominant:
Plummer (hoping for a great season, but not there yet
          P Tomkinson
          Goodhue (better at 13)
          McLeod (aka who?)

the cupboard is pretty bare. Love TJ Faiane to bits at Super/Mitre10, but not big enough for tests I fear

@nzzp ALB is best NZ 12 for me. Actually I might play ALB and Jack Goodhue as left and right midfielders, then Reiko Ioane or Peter Umaga-Jensen as the replacement off the bench.

Caleb Clarke might eventually be a 12 but looks a handful on the left wing for now.

In terms of Laumape, he looks a lot better behind a dominant pack. He's a worth a place in the AB squad but wouldn't be my first-choice starter at 12.

@nzzp Let's see how Havili goes at 12. We might see a Havili-Goodhue combo in action this weekend (probably depending on whether Jordan is fit to play at fullback).

Tupaea to me is the dark horse at 12 for me. Of course a lot will depend on if he can get game time there.

@stargazer Have to say I can see Havili having a say there to. I think the style Laumape plays ,he is not really big enough to do it at test level. Real keen on ALB , but beginning to think he maybe better at 13, but would be more than happy with him at 12, he could very well be the glue type player in backline ala Crotty.

I agree. He was outstanding a couple of seasons ago - not sure why he didn't get much gametime there last year. Also, he's only 25 -- still so young

If I was involved in NZR I'd be asking Charles Piutau if he was interested in a return to NZ Rugby to play 12 ahead of 2023.

Playing a fullback in the midfield at a RWC has never really worked for us in the past

But at a much lower level. And wasn't he not even a certain selection for HB. But he's young still (21 - 22 in 2 days). He looked a player to watch in his one start for the Canes back in 2019. So was surprised he was ignored last year, Esp with the limited Chase Tiatia getting a number of starts

@steven-harris he stayed on for 25 minutes after that try though. And it looked like he was still able to get up to full speed when he needed to. They were certainly working on his calf earlier in the game.

@steven-harris he stayed on for 25 minutes after that try though. And it looked like he was still able to get up to full speed when he needed to. They were certainly working on his calf earlier in the game.

Weirdly he seemed to be able to sprint more freely than jog or walk. Good attitude to play through and kept busy.

I see the referees made a picture to defend the conversion decision (shown on the breakdown)

Red lines, red circles. Could've done with some arrows
