I was really disappointed after the hype. Also it ddn't have a feature role for the coolest car ever in a movie-even cooler than the 'stang in Bullett

When I was 19 or so I looked at buying a falcon coupe, that slanted back windscreen makes reversing feel like you are trying to see through the slot in a letterbox.

No iconic fight scenes as well, the "big punch up" with the giant mutant son was lame as fuck.

What Crash is awesome!...... 
...anyway just got back from an advance screening (with free icecream!) of 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' Taika Waititi's latest. Took new Mrs Rembrandt and both of us had many laughs, kinda like 'Boy' but less serious. Definitely worth a watch and a PG rating too so pretty kid friendly.

Sounds like its nothing like the book then. Thats a shame, I read the book quite a few times as a kid.

It had comedy in it but it was a bloody good yarn about growing up and relationships between two people who were worlds apart to begin with.

Yeah the fat/skinny thing was a was one of my favourite bits of the book . For a Crump book it was actually quite emotional when he saw himself in the mirror for the first time. My mum teared up a bit when she read that part. 
I don't remember much comedy in it though, I reckon it's his best book . There's quite a lot of cool stuff covered in there you wouldn't expect In a Crump book. 
When I was in Australia I was putting my time sheet in and noticed the the guys name I was working with was Crump . I asked if he was any relation and he got defensive and asked if I knew him, when I said no he said " good , he was a fucking jerk". I left it until I got to know him s bit better and he said he was being s bit hard on Crump because with a dad like his he never stood a chance and then started telling me stories about his family which were so horrific I didn't know whether to believe them or not . About four years later I got a book called the endless fear by Crumps brother, he wasn't lying if anything his upbringing was worse than his nephew made out. Crumps father beat him so badly that he had the imprint of his foot on his neck for years afterwards , his father was holding him down like that while he whipped him with a belt. Just like his nephew said he figured out it really pissed off his dad if he didn't cry when he was getting beaten so he would do everything he could not to. After the beatings he'd go and lie under the house for a couple of days on an oilskin he had set up there. 
If you ever find that book it's bloody hard going and I don't know how the author ever found it in him to reconcile with his father when he was older. 
Well , there's today's downer.

Crucial

Sadly that violence from his father passed down the line and many of Crump's many wives and children have spoken out about the bashings he used to dish out. He seemed to have no idea how to deal with problems except hit out or move out.

I've got the book sitting out at home, had been meaning to re-read ahead of seeing the movie. Great yarn, not surprised your mum teared up Jegga - as a chubby kid that really got me in the feels too!

By mum I may have actually meant 11 year old me as well as her. 
Apparently Crump has kids he never met and never supported financially , his nephew said he came to stay once when he was broke. One night Barry and his dad went to the pub and dad didn't come home for six months . 
The book by his ex is called In salting the gravy, I never read it . His brothers book was more than enough for me .

Cowboys and Aliens
 
I had seen the last half of this before, but saw it on Netflix and decided to watch all of it.
 
Not a bad concept actually. A little loose in points, but James Bond does a decent enough American accent and brings the ice-cold stare nicely. 
 
Its a good movie to help explain the stupidity in relying on ballistic firearms over melee weapons in an alien/zombie scenario.

Piss off. Shakespeare in Love was a great movie. Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, Judi Dench, Colin Firth as the villain, even a young Ben Affleck...I'll forgive them for casting Gwyneth and her mozzie bites. (She shouldn't have gotten Best Actress)

Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
 
Bit of a tough one, as I mentioned the book was one of my favourites as a kid and I read it a quite a few times when I was the main characters age . The movie only borrows a few bits here and there from the book and one of the main themes -the boy being fat and having a real issue with it because as he says "fat is fatter on brown skin than white". Also the order things happen in the movie is different to the book and it could have done with more of Rima Te Wiatas character imho.
 
Anyway the good stuff.
 
Sam Neill , Rima Te Wiata and the kid are just superb, the boy-Julian Dennison in particular. The family of bush people are pretty good too, I was watching it thinking " I know that guy" when the father appeared , I think most people know someone pretty similar . The settings are fantastic too, the book was set in the Ureweras so I'm guessing the movie was too with cameos from the desert road area. Awesome seeing the lakes etc on the big screen.
 
There is loads of laughs throughout, a lot of them as I point out are a bit corny. 
 
The bad
 
My mrs elbowing me a couple of times early in the movie when Neill was talking to the boy and saying "thats you". Cheers for that.
 
Waititis films usually have a few of NZ pop culture references and corny dad jokes in them , in this one he's gone way over the top and it's almost like he tried to cram one into every single scene .Homages to kiwi movies and ads , they just annoyed me towards the end....actually well before the end.
 
The cyps worker was too over the top to be slightly believable as was Rhys Darbys character . I know its a comedy but they were just tedious.
 
I haven't done a lot of pig hunting but whoever told them that was how you did has obviously never done it at all. Jumping off a bank onto a pigs back with your knife out? Ffs.
 
 
And this might need a spoiler but the continuity dept will have those movie error geeks working overtime, Ricky runs away from the hut without a rifle, comes back without one, goes bush and its reappeared, it disappears again , reappears and then finally after he catches up with his uncle its on his uncles shoulder.
 
 
If you have never read the book you'll probably enjoy it a lot more than I did.
 
 
Talking about the book earlier in the thread I mentioned it was quite different to Crumps other ones and he was apparently a notorious plagiarist borrowing stories from people he met in his travels and his widow has come out today and said she had a hand in writing it.
