I don't have any idea whether there's any truth in it, but I've recently heard the rumour that McClutchie - after not getting a SR contract - signed a contract as injury cover with a Japanese club, but can't enter Japan because of COVID border restrictions (may have to do with the type of contract?). According to the rumour, more NZ players are in this position (including Baden Kerr). The rumour doesn't say when he signed that contract and with which club, but it would explain why he can't be called up now as injury cover for a NZ SR player.

So Love is still 19 DOB 24/4/2001 Morgan DOB 7/6/2001 Does the extra 6 weeks make a difference?I would think that age is only one of the factors to get NZR permission to play these young players. Morgan is small, so unless he has put some meat on his bones since leaving school it would be a big step up. Love is bigger and has played more NPC so far.

@mikey07 Certainly not, we have to endure going through all the guys training up at Rugby League Park right through to the Under 18s before that is likely to happen. Also throw in every Swindale Shield club first five before McLutchie is likely to be considered and that's before you even start on the guys playing in the 'Poo.

@stargazer Ahhh that might explain things a bit as the Canes selectors are probably looking up the white pages under the wrong spelling and not able to locate him then!

The second the got rid of Fletcher Smith I knew they were F***ed he was way better that JGB
The hurricanes need to change their tactics to have a chance this year. Last year they could at least get Laumape moving this year he's been a dud.
And getting rid of the van wouldn't go amiss...
He is too old and he's holding up rayasi's progress. -

@mackerzzzz Not sure what NZR or Canterbury has got to do with Hurricanes team selections. That's all on the Hurricanes' coaches; no running away from responsibility or blaming someone else.
Laumape was a dud for most of the 2020 season, too. Apparently, someone needs to show him some "disruspec" before he has a good game, or two. That seems to be enough to get him into the ABs ...

Laumape was a dud for most of the 2020 season, too. Apparently, someone needs to show him some "disruspec" before he has a good game, or two. That seems to be enough to get him into the ABs ...
@stargazer They seem to have some say over coaching appointments though. Firstly the Hamateur and now J Holland who both made their mark as assistant coaches at the Crusaders. One shudders to think what the ABs record might be under their stewardship.

@higgins Jason Holland has never been coach at the Crusaders; he has been a Canterbury assistant coach, but that's a long time ago. He has been assistant coach at the Hurricanes since 2015.
@stargazer That makes it even more strange how he keeps getting the appointments further up the chain.
