You're a damn tough marker. It's the toughest sports tournament in the world - to (a) get there, and (b) not lose is a significatn achievement. We'll take it.

It is certainly an achievement, but it's also a game where it's much easier to not lose than it is to win.

1. Soccer. More than 200 countries trying to qualify for the cup. 5 of the top 10 most well attended leagues. More money than yuo can shake a stick at.

and then, down in 53rd, behind curling and ahead of kabbadi is rowing.

We are good at rowing, but it's a very small sport, with an over-representation of medals. What other traditional team sport (where you all do the same thing) can you be 15th best in your country and come home with a gold medal?

I am absolutely not denigrating the achievements, as they are amazing. But the pool of competitors is so much smaller. Hell, Bond and Murray were so good other competitors jumped into different boats to avoid them.

So, yes we should celebrate our rowing success, as it's damn hard and damn competitive. But we should also recognise the All Whites and the Basketballers coming 4th in a world championship (2002).. The scale of that event is so much bigger.

Not according to @nzzps post, no.

Rugby is better - but it's not got the global reach of soccer.

Soccer is ridiculously simple to play - any number of players, anything round and not crazily hard, and you've got a game.

And to all the All Whites haters you are ignoring the obvious fact that draws are far more common in Soccer than any other sport. To go to a World Cup and not drop a game was absolutely phenomenal. I'm still pissed at the cheating Italians, we should have beaten them 1-0 but for their acting.

It was obviously monumental for the AWs to get to the Cup and you can only play what’s in front of you, but I just consider their qualification draw something of a joke. New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu then Bahrain. Now if they’d had to beat a European or South American side to get in that would be a different story

And they didn’t lose a game....but they also didn’t win.

Soccer is a different beast and they certainly did themselves proud at the cup and it was great to watch, but yeah it does seem a little weird to celebrate not losing but still going out in the first round. Maybe a bit like making the final of the Olympic 100m sprint and not coming last?

Not sure about that but we were the only unbeaten team in that world cup as the eventual winners (Spain) lost a pool game. Good trivia question.

It definitely isn’t true. Both Scotland (1974) and Cameroon (1982) were unbeaten but went out.

I'm guessing not many countries were chosen and the fact that the melbourne papers have ninety five million features a day on RULZ has given aerial ping pong a misleading global importance

I think it was the Paston penalty save, that just eclipses the Fallon goal (I actually had to think who scored, rather than automatically recalling the penalty). That was 'the' moment.

But, regardless, the qualifying playoff match was in 2009 . Not in this decade.

As someone who was at the Caketin for this game, and at Eden Park for the 2011 RWC final, I would pick the football over the rugby for a sporting moment. I was very relaxed at Eden Park, but must have been the only one.

The drive to Auckland, seeing kids on SH1 in Huntly waving AB flags, the walk to and from Eden Park. But inside the stadium the crowd was subdued, nerves likely. Typical of a NZ rugby crowd. In comparison, the football crowd was much more vocal which made the experience greater. Obviously winning the RWC after 24 years meant more to me.

Lower tier of the North Stand towards the terraces end. I sat in the West Stand for other games (QF, SF).

These guys were vocal.

crowd tense but vocal, voiced their dismay at Beaver coming on, while my mate and I sang his praises as a varsity man. And we were right.

I think I was near you. In line with the 22 at the end Beaver kicked his goal over. Had that grumpy old curmudgeon Murray Deaker behind me. I remember the cops lining the sidelines in the second 40, like they were worried about a pitch invasion. It was pretty quiet and tense in the final 15 despite me and my mates trying to rark everyone around us into action
