@no-quarter that pass from Kronfeld to Lomu against Ireland was a thing of beauty.

I'll die in a ditch, but the balance was what set Lomu apart. Big fast guys exist, but his abiliyt to stay on his feet was just remarkable

rugby was a different sport in the 90s. Look at the fucking space! We're constantly looking at Lomu with 15m to operate. Modern wingers very very rarely get 15m to play with. Defensive sides are so good at holding their width on defense, even from broken play.

@no-quarter A couple of those were quite funny. Merhts just stands there thinking "Where's Jonah? Ah there he is - off you go".

Any reason the last 54 seconds of that were blank?

@booboo I just absolutely shake my head at how we managed to lose that match with Lomu wreaking so much havoc. What the hell were the rest of the team doing? His performance alone should have been enough for a 20 point victory.

Without a doubt, those were the glory years for backlines where players were (semi) professional but the game still allowed plenty of space to throw the ball around.

That said, Lomu would still be an absolute weapon in todays game if he was fully fit. His acceleration, balance and sheer size makes him damn near impossible to stop first go, the amount of space he would create for others just by being on the field would be gold in todays game.

@no-quarter not to mention he'd benefit as much as everyone else from modern training and nutrition. Once I clicked it I just had to watch the whole thing. Power, balance, and speed. Every fullbacks nightmare!

That and a two metre sidestep. People forget that he had some amazing skills other than running over people.

Agree about the balance though back in the days when 'core' referred to apples he was standing on exercise balls while doing bicep curls.

Absolutely. I remember the try he scored in the Scotland-AB classic in '96.

Sped down the the left touchline with about 6 inches to spare pushing off players before he scored in the corner. Never deviated from his line.

Daylight saving, a great reason for memes. Apart from the date, this one nails it.

Edit: reading further it seems to be some sort of tribute to the EU, so am surprised Rita Panahi retweeted. But it's still cool despite being a very slick production.
