@donsteppa cricinfo stats are down but I had the same thought.

NZ didn't play all that much and WWII intervened. Our first victory was in our 45th Test against Windies.

Of those 45 21 were against the Poms, 1 against Oz, p SA, 6 WI, 3 Pak, 5 India. All the games against the two South Asian sides were played away.

Bangles won their first test at the 35th attempt at home against Zimbabwe. They didn't win again until their 60th Test against a very poor Windies side

What does this mean. Bugger all except you can't compare records acrodss different eras.

Well yeah NZ were extremely poor for ages, when John Reid died he was painted as some kind of world class all rounder when all he was in all honesty was the best player in a shite side.

It’s funny the WIndies are mentioned. Historically they’ve had a shitload more cricketing legends than we’ve had, but compare the two test teams now ?

Taking the field with Conway wicket keeping is not a good strategy. He's not got the technique or finesse. I was sure that Phillips kept for a couple of CPL seasons - not sure why he doesn't do it because Conway looked like a real part timer.

IIRC Phillips' knee problems means he can't be a regular WK.

I think they also wanted him to bowl.
3 overs 1/20 @ 6.67 would say that he is more than handy and they had it right.

Did you see his 3 overs? There were some terrible balls in there.

Yeah I did, but he got away with them and the end result was pretty good. Statistics and damn lies I guess.

Anyone in Auckland think there is any likelihood of play today?

Tight stumping but I think he's just OK.

Benefit of the doubt to batsman.

Seems you must refer to the BC's new opening bat as F'Nallin

I struggle to see why we seem to get Bangladesh touring nearly every year they seem to have taken over Sri Lanka as being here every other year. When they are hear they hardly test us would have more competition playing a Sheffield Shield team.

Our biggest problem is our population size. There's just not as much money to be made in TV rights when we are playing, do we often just get minnows. I'd say us making the championship test final was a bit of a disaster for a lot of broadcasters.

@no-quarter It seems to be either Sri Lanka, Pakistan or Bangladesh...COVID aside SA haven’t been here since 2017.

Broadcasters would have loved England v India at Lord's.

    All true.
The best way to beat that is to be the best I suppose. Aus don't have a huge population but I generally watch them play anyone, because they are always good and to see if they get knocked over. Same with the AB's, they draw big crowds, and TB audiences because they are damned good - and entertaining. I don't watch much NBL anymore but I watched MJ and the bulls.

If we can lose our own "minnows" tag we will go some way to negating our population based financial issues.

Back to back ODI WC finals helps. A win in the TWC would help even more. Throw in a T20WC...We might get some respect, some more viewers and be more attractive to visiting teams and broadcasters alike.

I reckon we would have to be successful over a couple of generations of players for us to get true respect. See what we are like when the likes of Boult, Southee, Taylor gone and we have an aging Williamson. If we replace those players and stay near the top other countries will start to take notice and perhaps believe that the current team is not an anomaly.

@crazy-horse Sure, it's not going to happen overnight. Hopefully having a great team now inspires the next generation as well though, so success breeding success.

@snowy The good thing we seem to have depth, the next tier down have to fight to make this side which is definitely a good thing. Even with our u-19s making the finals is also a good sign.

When the Big 3 set up their cartel to siphon off more ICC money and promise to tour each other all the time. It didn't matter that the Proteas were the best in the world (and had 4th largest tv rights market).

So, I dont think much matters. Nothing gets u in that club except being as big as the 3rd largest market (Aus) and being good.

However, South Africa have had way better itineraries than us, and that is a legacy of being good for so long.

Long winded way of agreeing with you but pointing out the ceiling does not go beyond best or most attractive of the non 'big 3'.

@rapido No doubt. "Best of the rest" i.e non cartel, should get us some improvements in tours and opposition, hopefully. Not that that would be hard to improve on.

Those three are going to have a circle jerk anyway. Got to wonder if they are going to overdo it and lose appeal to the their audience due to repetition.
