Regards Wheeler, it is just not on, kono imo! (That does mean potato head, right?) But at least he had the guts to apologize. And Himeno sounds a good bloke.

@bones Point was that everyone has an accent and it only sounds weird to people who aren't used to it. On a sociolinguistic level, people who take the piss out of someone's accent are usually unaware of their own.

I'm pretty surprised that's a point you feel needs to be made. It may be hard to believe (case in point) but we're actually all adults here. Do you really think there's large swathes of people that don't know that?

Well there you go, that answers my question. If that's legit I'm genuinely astounded. I don't think I would know anyone that doesn't realise they have an accent, that's really bizarre.

I was probably unclear - I mean when/how did you expect Wheeler to self reflect? If he makes a shit joke about the Japanese accent, does he have to immediately follow it with one about his own accent?

I've met people who don't think they have accents, everybody else does. One did not think Manhattan was an island either (she was American).

I missed what Wheeler said, must of been when I left room for minute. And perhaps he needs to apologise, but did anyone have a go at Aussie commentators for say you lot over the dutch etc? Happens a lot, never worried me and like what Wheeler did, just in my opinion show the person struggles to be funny.

He's just not funny. Wheeler is made out by many to be this hilarious larrikin but he's simply another bad example of the shallow talent pool in our small nation.
Racist though? Nah. Just a poor attempt at an accent mock, which is as common a joke as anything and pretty harmless in isolation.

That's pretty much the hammer and the nail head. Wheeler comes across as someone that likes to take the piss and is actually mates with a lot of the players. Which makes for bad broadcasting, comms that constantly refer to players by nicknames and crack "in jokes" on air are cringe as as fuck, some of the NZ and Aussie cricket comms are a case in point. Keep that shit between you and your mates, when you're on air at least try to say something insightful (you know, what you got hired for) most people are not interested in your stupid jokes.

You're doing this all wrong. You're meant to now say that his apology didn't go far enough and that he needs to atone for his sins by "listening" and "educating himself", and that if he had any decency at all he'd step aside for a marginalized Japanese person to take his position.

A lot of Japanese expats I've met have been good "lad" types, who are up for a crude laugh. I wouldn't do that to them on national TV though ...
Also, Wheeler is one of the stupidest sounding, backwards hicks in NZ, so he's in no position to take the piss out of anyone.
