I'd not been back for 3 years & had been living in Harlesden (think gun crime capital of London) and travelled to Nairobi, Tangiers, Marseille - all places with a bit of a reputation. And I stopped off in Huntly to get a pie & it dawned on my that was easily the most on edge I'd felt in the previous 3 years. I'd not remotely put it past the average pissed up Kiwi to punch out a deaf bloke for looking at him funny.

On the plus side I think it does contribute to the chilled out attitude most kiwis have when travelling. Sort of a "this doesn't seem too bad, I once got Maccas at 3am in Hamilton".

I always feel its a shame there were no Rwanda style masacres in NZ as I really think a bunch of South Auckland street kids on glue would make a cracking, if somewhat disorganised, strike force. Like a less "feel good" version of Beasts of No Nation

I honestly cannot even imagine the type of bullshit you guys have to put up with from obnoxious drunk fuckwits in town. I just cannot stand the "macho man" culture in NZ. I'm not interested in going to town in the weekends anymore, just too much bullshit everywhere from absolute creeps to aggro dickheads.

Yep, back in the day blokes had much more of a code of conduct when fighting, nowadays it's often a case of one sucker punching another, a whole bunch of people joining in and another filming it.

The most common scenario that normally happened was one of a large group picking a fight. Starts off one on one, the guy who was mouthy starts getting a towelling so all his mates climb into the other party (who is normally alone or with a small group of friend) and finish him off because their mates can't. Cue the high fiving and general disregard for human life as they leave the guy with head injuries on the pavement.

I'm genuinely surprised that New Zealand doesn't deal with more deaths from 'king hit' type scenarios on Friday and Saturday nights in the same way that Aussie have. Even in the last decade, it seems that 18 year olds are getting bigger and stronger than 18 year olds have ever been, as the whole "jersey/geordie shore" gym culture becomes a massive thing and guys get right into their weights and vanity from an earlier age. The down side of this is, the first sign of trouble in town and these guys are ripping their shirts off and wading in to fights to test out their brand new biceps.

I've recently left the Police to head overseas for a few years, but still have a lot of mates who work CIB crime car (crime car is the detectives that deal with initial action in serious crime). It would seem like this summer, their Friday and Saturday nights are just over-run with dealing with incidents where people have been knocked unconscious by some thug who didn't like the way they were looking at them outside a burger joint.

My landlord over here (Thailand) was raving to me about how safe New Zealand is, and how dangerous Thailand is. As the other posters have said above, I've never felt unsafe walking down the street in the middle of the night over here, but I probably just wouldn't bother in New Zealand.

Yes, you're probably less likely to be murdered in your home by a stranger in the middle of the night in New Zealand, but statistically speaking, if you're an 18-40 year old male, you're a reasonable chance of getting assaulted at some point in your life.

Businessmen didn't wait til 3am to follow me from the subway and/or attempt to drag me down a side alley, did it in broad daylight. They learned a lesson about respecting western women shortly afterward though.

Reminds me of a time I was walking behind an elderly couple in a quiet tube station after dark. I had a jacket, beanie, hadn't shaved in a few days and they literally reached into the old dears purse ready to give me whatever I wanted !! I politely said that wouldn't be necessary and smiled and walked off, this was pretty early on in my time in London, if I'd known how much it was gonna cost to live there I probably would have actually mugged them like they thought I was going to.

I was waiting for a mate outside the KFC in Leicester Square. he was taking ages so I sat down against the wall. My scalp must have got itchy or something as I momentarily took my cap off to scratch my head, rub my eyes and generally be knackered... and somebody threw a pound coin in my cap!

I decided I needed to dress better.

Bringing this one back, as this case has finally come before the courts.

Turned out that the homeowner chased the burglar 400m from his house, before choking him to death while beating him up:

http://www.theherald.com.au/story/3892699/hamilton-burglar-choked-to-death/

BENJAMIN Batterham chased burglar Ricky Slater-Dickson for more than 400 metres before tackling him to the ground and putting him in a “choker hold’’ where he punched him repeatedly every time he resisted, a court has heard.

A bail hearing for the murder accused on Friday also heard allegations that Mr Batterham remained “extremely’’ aggressive “before, during and after” the altercation and had later told authorities “give me two minutes with him’’.

Mr Batterham, 33, is accused of murdering Mr Slater-Dickson on March 26 after he found the alleged victim stealing a handbag from inside his family’s Hamilton home about 3.20am while Mr Batterham was drinking with a friend.

He is alleged to have chased Mr Slater-Dickson for “more than four football fields” before tackling him to the ground, punching him repeatedly in the head while having his arm around the burglar’s throat.

Puts the original 'free Benjamin Batterham' stuff in a different light IMO, I reckon a murder charge is fairly appropriate.
