The Edge discovered a wah wah pedal for that one, in other words yet another effect to try and cover up what an utterly ordinary guitarist he is.

Edge certainly isn't a technical guitarist but he creates soundscapes through his heavy use of effects. A bit like Andy Summers.

Also, Gerry Rafferty had other hit songs. You would love the bass in this song.

Andy Summers had some chops though, one of my favourite guitar leads ever is on “Landlord”.....but I do see what you mean.......”Walking on the Moon” springs to mind

    Summers can play

    The evidence m'lord

Yeah I tried hard to get in to the tea party but rest of album was pretty meh. Still listening to heaps of 90s grungy rock at the moment.

Been saying that for 30 years now ...

Hard habit to shake when you look at some of the shit thats been served up since!

Indeed. As we’re all in our 40s ( or some fluffybunnies on here are even older ) the chances of finding a cool new band are extremely low.

That's harsh mn5 I mean true but harsh, probably not many younger and as you say some c***s even older (bugger you found me out) , but it just about what I was thinking. I struggling to even know the bands getting mentioned, but unless they got some song that catches my attention I don't even retain their names in my brain 😖 .

Well, I’ve discovered a dude called Frank Ocean and Mac Millar did some good stuff too.......but I’m definitely clutching at straws.

Yep I find the odd one on youtube, these days. I pretty well lean towards Blues music have done for years, and only really look at live music videos. Kind of get into the likes of Tedeschi Trucks band etc, found a gig of theirs on youtube after getting into Derek Truck when he was touring Aus a few years back as part of Eric Clapton's band. Had a look found the band he and his missus (who is a tsaty guitarist anyway) had got underway, very good, saw tham at a Blues fest about 4-5 years ago and one of thsoe bands that in no way disappoint. Which is not what this thread is about, actually opposite I suppose😁

These music threads are always a bit of fun. How about bands/songs you like but are a bit embarrassed or ashamed of 😰

@mariner4life Ironically, I've never really had a problem with either of the two bands you mention.

I've not forgotten the first time I heard Creed. My Own Prison was on the radio and I was driving with a couple of mates to get F & C. It started and it all went quiet, then we continued to sit and listen after arrival til the song ended. AT which point we were all like WTF was that ... totally awesome. Used to regularly listen to my own prison going across the Kaimai's between home and uni.

Nickelback ... they have some catchy tunes, everybody just needs to accept that. Yeah, they are in it for the money, but so what. As I sit here between meetings about utterly pointless shit that nobody gives a fuck about, they play huge gigs across Canada and a few other parts ....

They had one thing in common though. A massive image problem across their target markets.

    Can take or leave them.

Interestingly both Mrs Boo and Ms Boo Jr both lol Nickelback. MBJ in particular at 17. Just doesn't get their rep.

To me it's a bit like The Doors. You've got to like them else you're not cool. Nickelback you've got to hate them else you're not cool.

If I had the ability to feel shame, I guess I wouldn't mention Dixie Chicks or Roger Whittaker. Oooh that reminds me, off to the thrashed thread...

Not at all ( and I am certainly one of the fluffybunnies you refer to).
I do listen to older music and artists for sure but have also discovered radio shows that not only deal to my tastes and known artists but constantly introduce me to new artists influenced by the stuff I like.
Totally Wired Radio (especially Eddie Piller) and BBC6 (Craig Charles) are great at this. They also introduce me to old music that I hadn’t heard.
As for the OP and question in the thread title I really can’t think of any band that I hate that have a song I like.

This is why I hate the music threads, you all become bloody broken records. I knew U2 would get slated pretty quickly yet again.
And Lightening Crashes was a brilliant song.

I gave U2's Achtung Baby a listen recently out of curiosity (Joshua Tree is the only album I like by them). God damn the production is some terrible try-hard shit. Utterly amateurish and miserable. The Fly is the only half decent song on the album.

The Edge discovered a wah wah pedal for that one, in other words yet another effect to try and cover up what an utterly ordinary guitarist he is.

I must confess to genuinely liking the title track for zooropa and two hearts beat as one is a good foot stomper so U2 aren’t a complete lost cause for me ( which I guess is the whole point of this thread )

There are definitely a gem or few on Zooropa. I only grew to appreciate them years later

Stay Faraway So Close from Zooropa is one of my favourite songs ever by any band. U2 albums usually grow on you. Hated Achtung Baby after the first couple of listens, now I rate in in my top 5.

@majorrage Creed will 100% remind me of one thing. The first time this girl who would go on to be my girlfriend took me back to her place, that album is what she put on.

    ah uni, cracking days.
