And yes you are probably whooshing me but I did enjoy Blighty, apart from the food, climate, transport, wages, crime, and ... being probably that rare type of posted colonial who preferred the smaller and older towns to London..

@rancid-schnitzel long held the view that a benevolent despot is the most effective form of government. Just depends on your definitions of effective and benevolent.

Singapore had, IIRC, the best paid government officials in the world. So theoretically no need to line one's pockets. They have certainly done brilliantly well over the last 70 years or so

@rancid-schnitzel I did not mean Eastern govts are doing well, I just know less about them.
I do however know Singapore well and Taiwan-a little bit.
Singapore ticks the boxes but not a fan of the climate (or the hyper shopping lifestyle) but the food is good, the tax is great for expats and I prefer their COVID-handling to Australia's. Not worried about the gum, probably more worried about the cost of good beer (but then it is still probably cheaper than Australia).
China-Taiwan relationships rule it out for me (but the cuisine, yeah, and traditional Chinese is a tick). -

I've always told people I'd start as a benevolent dictator and end up as a tyrannical despot. Simply too many idiots to deal with and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

First proper after match was better than the first scrum!

Played prop today for 2nds - loosehead then shifted to tighthead when we were getting a bit of pressure there. The guy starting at THP was getting his 50th cap so I let him pick which side he wanted. Went down 6-0 after we didn't see the ball for 15 minutes, but once we got going we finished over the top 33-20. Firsts lost after playing some rugby as dumb as they are talented.
Anyway, I got a point from the coach for doing the dirty work at ruck time while all big boppers who have come across from league just wanted to set up and run the ball. Which is fine as they were hurting people in contact, but I was getting pretty stuffed with the other 2 white guys in the pack having to cover every fucking ruck...
70 minutes full game. Was going to back up for 1s but they didn't need me, thank fuck. I'll be sore enough tomorrow but it was a good day.

I’m in awe of anyone who gets on the field at that age. As someone who essentially pussied out of rugby in my mid-20s, the idea of subjecting my body to that absolutely awesome but insanely brutal sport is unthinkable. Weirdly enough though I have this recurring dream of taking the field but suddenly realising I don’t have a mouth guard. Not sure what tf Freud would make of that!
