Is there a reason why we don't get feijoas here in Oz? Do they not grow well here? Or are Aussie palates just too heathen to appreciate them?

The distribution of feijoa around the world is fucking weird.
Somewhere in the 'Stans - or some quick research suggests Azerbaijan or Georgia - I was very surprised to suddenly see feijoa juice on the shelves in every store. Cross another land-border, or the Caspian Sea - and it completely disappeared.

That's what they were called in the US too. The price the supermarket was charging was ridiculous, and that was 20 years ago.

I think I'll give it a miss then as it looks like stuff out of a drained pond.

I know that we asked around when in Oz and apparently they are reasonably common in backyards in Victoria and SA. Just have never caught on as a commercial fruit.
I think that it is only recent horticulture and breeding that has made them suitable for storage/transport as well. Hence the reason you see more in supermarkets now.
We found some in London, at Borough Market. Cost £2 for one.
Probably not the case at the moment but you can basically get anything fruit and veg that you want in London (wholesale). I was totally blown away by the ordering lists I saw from some dealers. You want it and are willing to pay and they will get it.

Never saw feijoa in Brisbane either, and by geez my missus kept an eye out to. She loves them, I think discovering that she could get feijoa cider here in NZ, was what finally helped decide her that I was right in wanting to come home😁

You better introduce her to this if you haven't already:

    Lothlorien Winery Ltd-Feijoa-Wine

    Lothlorien Winery Ltd-Feijoa-Wine

Lothlorien Winery is home to the certified organic and vegan Feijoa sparkling wine. An award winning winery since 1993. Lothlorien Winery is New Zealand made and owned and located 45 minutes North of Auckland. The winery is a family operated business. Growing fresh fruit & making wine from feijo

Feijoa wines, including a sparkling. Not to everyone's taste but they have been around a long time so must be going O.K. All organic too.

Feijoa looks amazing, you've just sent me down a googling rabbit hole and I've watched some kiwi bloke on youtube planting them down his drive. Also found out they grow well in most climates.... I should probably think about tasting one first.
    I now want an orchard.

@voodoo you might want to try Harris Farm. I've seen them at the one in Cammeray.

I've got a massive feijoa bush in the back yard of my parents place. It fruits but we often get fruit flys in them so we don't eat them.

Love to eat them especially when home in NZ and love Feijoa vodka. Absolute used to make one but can't find it but I see 42 Below does one now and available at Dan's. Will have to grab a bottle.

42 Below were making it back in the day as a core product before they even sold out to big business.

Would recommend that you do taste one - they can be quite polarising. The vegemite of fruits.

Had a guy in a few weeks ago to help design our orchard, what to plant where, what will grow in our soil, all that sort of stuff. Made me very enthusiastic. The best bit was that he told the wife that I needed at least a 7 tonne digger and that she would get sick of me complaining about trying to do the job with my 1.6 tonne. He actually convinced her.

You can get really bad tasting feijoas (low in flavour, sour and bitter, or almost medicinal or fermented, in a bad way) or ones like those in the photo which were a tropical party in the mouth, sweet tangy, delicious
