I'm watching the latest dadsploitation movie, Nobody. Now the inciting incident is beating up some guys because they were drunk and got on a bus? They're really have given up.

RIght, so I gave the latest dadspoilation movie, Nobody, another go,

    • My first thought - only figured out a while into the movie on first watch, to be fair - that the soundtrack choice was done by a kid - with a thought process of "this scene is about how the guy is a nice guy, with good intentions - so I'll pick "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood";
and this one is about how he's been trying to be a suburban dad, but got pushed into this where he's just going to... "I've Gotta Be Me" - was pretty much spot on.
      • The director got his teenage son to do the soundtrack
    • Other criticisms... this was by no means a typical "Death Wish" or dadsploitation movie. If anything, on a second watch, it was almost a deliberate remake of the shitty '80s movies, but done well.
    • Or - maybe, it wasn't deliberate. On this rewatch, realising how much of it was shit that I would take the piss out of on re-watching some random 80's crap movie.. .plot-wise, continuity-gap-wise, etc - it did make me wonder if I was just giving it a pass because it was recent, or that it wasn't Lundgren/etc.
eg: Nobody being stuck in a car, looking out the back - and being on a freeway... so sticking a fire-extinguisher through the backseat (exactly where the black-saffa was clearly sitting a second ago) and causing a crash in a deserted city street

Anyway - I still thought it was fun. And I'm looking forward to re-watching John Wick with that same pair of jaded sunglassed "would I give this a pass if it had been made in the 80's"

Edit: re-reading that myself, smashed, it's pretty obvious I'm smashed. But... I stand by the sentiment.

You’re the ferns best film reviewer by far....much of this is due to lack of competition.....but you’re still the best.

I am watching the Star Chamber. The big twist is so fucking dumb. The obviously guilty sickos are still guilty, they just aren't the only child murderers in Los Angeles. The movie refuses to acknowledge this. Infuriating.

    Jojo Rabbit

Not usually one to get on kiwi bandwagons, in fact I usually avoid them like the plague but this is one I’m glad I didn’t. Considering I nearly turned it off in the first 15 minutes ( when it just seemed juvenile and stupid ) I was really impressed what a well made and poignant flick it turned out to be. I am a sucker for a good WWII era movie and this is up there with some of the best. Shit the lead kid has some acting chops on him and some great support from the rest of them ( even that big fat Australian chick wasn’t too irritating )

watched two movies over the weekend with the kids

    Ford v Ferrari
This is pretty good. Simple story of Ford deciding to try and win Le Man. Carried by the ability of Matt Damon and most especially Christian Bale (playing what i expect is christian bale in real life). Of course this movie being American you need bad guys, so that's Ferrari (because damn foreign types) and fluffybunnies in suits (management fucking over the working man). Both are way too overplayed.

But it's a cool little movie that i really enjoyed. Bale's wife is pretty freaking cute too

6 hot brakes out of 7 thousand revs

And then Sunday it was education time in the Mariner household, so we watched Terminator 2

This movie still fucking rules. At the absolute pinnacle of both action and sci fi movies. The set pieces are fucking ace. The graphics definitely still hold up. Yes Furlong is a dick. Yes Sarah Conner is waaaay overdoing it. But it's the two best terminators of the entire series going at it.

5 surprisingly accurate mini guns out of 5 grenades in your mother fucking shoulder!

Pffft, you need to torture yourself more then......

Funny how both massive 80’s sci fi franchises ( Alien and Terminator ) started with a great flick, had a sequel that was EVEN better, tanked with a third and had rapidly diminishing results after that.......Alien has saved it somewhat with Prometheus and Covenant ( I know not everyone agrees with this ) but Terminator is an absolute dumpster fire now.

The one with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington was good. Terminator Salvation

completely disagree about the Terminator the highlight before it jumped the shark was a classic tale called "the Penetrator"..not work safe, needless to say there were a few Sarah Connors in the phone book to get through!

Fair enough... that looks like a career highlight in the making.
I'd already lined up Monster Hunter, Trigger Point, Willy's Wonderland, and some guy called Zack's fan-flick version of Justice League.
But this looks like a priority.

Fuck, I do love me some knock-offs, and the labelling on them. Living in China a while back, the corner DVD-stores were awesome, the electronics stores were sweet, the mall-stalls selling Rolexes were a bargain, and then you find a proper alleyway market - with child's toys like this. Some - good enough to photograph, although I'd struggle to find the photos I bothered taking - amidst the other constant insanity.
"Door Ladder" - however - has me especially bemused, and amused.
