    Nash Cup - Sat 1 May 2021:

    MAC v NOBM
    HRS v Clive
    Central v Napier Tech
    Taradale v Havelock North
    Tamatea v Pirate

This is from the article about this weekend's club games on Hawke's Bay App:

Available again for the Central sub union's Bebbington Shield team if required, Slingsby, pointed out he wasn't a fan of the Bay's premier club competition format this season which will see Havelock North and Napier Pirate Rugby and Sports miss out on Maddison Trophy play.

"Havelock North have won more premier trophies than most clubs. Yet they may lose a lot of players who don't want to play second division. Teams will be a lot different in the second round than the first ... we will be when we have everyone back on board."

"The Hawke's Bay union sent out a survey but obviously didn't take notice of the response. It would be good if they came and spoke with the players and not club committee members," Slingsby said.

"Rugby is a dying sport. The sports which are growing are the ones which are played during the week. Rugby has to move with the times. It's time for more Friday night games so players can spend more Saturdays with their wives and kids," Slingsby added.

I've had my doubts about the new format from the start, but if clubs like Havelock North and Pirates are going to lose players to other clubs because of relegation, this new format may have dire consequences.

As to more Friday night games: how many premier players are fathers who prefer to spend their Saturdays with their family? Or is this just the opinion of an older player?

Does he actually? There's no Southern Cross Hospitals in HB are there? 😉

@stargazer Bloody Havelock supporting a player who plays for the evil Southlanders. I herby withdraw all my support for them and renounce the fact I once played for them.

Also, why would we be wondering if he wasn't playing when he was playing 4 days ago?

@nepia I knew he was playing for them; you were the one wondering 😉 .

And, thus far, I haven't seen any media release from Southland that he has re-signed with them (his previous contract has expired), so that means he doesn't have to play there. He has a regular job and lives in Hawke's Bay.

Having said that, unless MMT and Gareth Evans haven't recoved from their injuries in time for the NPC, and/or the ABs pick up Flanders, and/or we lose more loosies, I'm not interested in Lamborn returning to the Magpies, no matter how well he played for the Stags. I'd rather see a return from Hugh Renton, but I don't think that will happen.

Danny Toala playing at centre for Hastings, today.

I assume Lolagi Visinia will be playing for Clive, so they'll play against each other, possibly even marking each other.

Haven't seen a line-up for Napier Pirate, but if Pouri Rakete-Stones is playing today, he'll be playing against a Tamatea frontrow with Mason Kean at LH and Kianu Kereru-Symes. McClutchie playing at 10. Several more Hastings Boys champions talent in that Tamatea squad, by the way, with Ash Robinson-Bartlett, Donovan Godinet, Elijah Mataira and Hunta Marsch. Not really surprising they're going well this season.

By the way, this game will be livestreamed on the HBRU FB page! I'll post the link when available.

If anyone is going to the MAC v NOBM game, I'd be interested to hear how the new NOBM lock (5) Boris Van Bruchem is going. I wonder whether he came here on his own initiave, or whether he was asked to play here by the Magpies coaches. Also Zach Donaldson at halfback.

I was referencing the comment from his instagram post, not you. Why would people be wondering if he was in a team 4 days ago?

Although I'm not a huge fan of Lamborn, we might actually need him this year with injuries.

@higgins Found it. Rakete-Stones is on the Norths team list for their game against Petone.

Pirate could have used him. They've been terrible, this year.

@stargazer With confirmation of him turning out for someone down here it gives me a very uneasy feeling in the stomach. Will be careful what I consume at the Axemen's aftermatch function. Tiaki Fabish is listed at lock for OBU so will try and give him the once over.

By the way, Bas Visinia is playing club rugby in Manawatu (OBM) nowadays. So either someone has overtaken him in the pecking order (Thompson-Dunn?; a new signing?), or Manawatu has approached him. He was in the Magpies fringes on an injury replacement contract, last year, and in the Saracens before that, so I guess it makes sense he's trying it somewhere else.

It looks like they've completely given up on streaming the game. Damn it, I was looking forward to watching some of our Magpies boys in action.

    Watched Hastings v Clive.

Hastings clearly superior, had the wind in the first half for a 17-0 lead. Vastly superior scrum which shunted Clive back at every scrum until props Hastings Jason Long and Dennis Tapusoa were subbed off in the second half.

Lolagi Visinia (Clive) and Danny Toala (Hastings) marked each other. Not much of a contest, as Hastings had the majority possession. Toala and Visinia confronted each other three times, all with Toala in possession, Toala was tackled twice and got around Visinia once.

On Blues v Chiefs last night:

    Zarn Sullivan = HB Under 16, 2016

    Bailyn Sullivan = HB Under 16, 2014
