The US owners of the teams still won't sell despite all of the protests. I'm happy to be wrong.

I agree with Graeme Souness that a lot of yesterday simply has to do with Man U's fans' longstanding grievances about the Glazers' management of their club and very little with the now abandoned ESL. Truth is, though, only the Saudis or the Chinese have the kind of money to buy Man U and there's no guarantee either of those owners will be any better than the Glazers

Although I agree on the first point completely, I don't on the second one.

There's plenty of money around outside oligarchs and China who could afford to buy these clubs. Unfortunately, there's only so many of them who are stupid enough to think it could be a worthwhile investment. There's a reason why only one of the clubs is owned by a US investment company & there's also a reason why they are the most hated owners by their fans (although they do have some stiff competition).

Hence, my views on Silver Lake.

Their sole purpose is to make money (unlike the sheiks and Roman, who used their clubs as vanity projects and did it to reflect in the glory of their success). How can their intentions be good for NZ rugby in general?

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear about the type of owner to which I was referring - lots of wealthy people / organisations could obviously buy the clubs, but the questions is how many would be willing to pump the kind of money in that the Chelsea, PSG & Man City owners do year-on-year, without necessarily wanting a sizeable return on that investment

@canefan The main issue with the Glazers is the leveraged purchase that saddled ManU with a bucket load of debt.

That wouldn't be repeated with Silver Lake. The Glazers have seen Man U's revenue take off mainly because they saw the potential in regionalised sponsorships - a model all the other big clubs have followed. They see the club as a cash cow and have under-invested - mainly in the facilities. They have actually spent plenty on players just poorly.

Again Silver Lake would be quite different as they would not have the controlling interest. You have to be believe NZR would continue to govern for what they believe would be best for the game.

Not defending teh Silver Lake deal but don't think the Glazers are an appropriate point of comparison.

@dogmeat fair enough. As you say, at least they have tried to spend. Spurs owner Joe Lewis is an 80s something billionaire and has only ever been see to be taking from the club rather than injecting at the time when you were easily able to, unlike Roman for example. It's his money of course, but if you own billions, why would you not want to bask in the glory of your plaything winning trophies? Otherwise what is the point?

So fans of a professional sports team are upset they haven't won much for a while, so trashed the joint, slashed a cop, and got a game called off? Scummy scummy behavior

Premier League sides, like nearly every professional sporting organisation, stopped being "clubs" a long time ago. They are a badge and a stadium and a rotating set or personnel. These idiots seem pissed simply because their current roster of recruited millionaires isn't as good as other teams roster of recruited millionaires.

So they kicked off. What exactly did they think that little stunt was going to achieve?

They'll probably be punished by having to play their remaining games in an empty stadium... oh wait...

Man City destroyed PSG and are in to the Champs League final

I hope they win it to be honest. It's the one trophy they need to cap off what an extraordinary team they have been over the last few years

I watched the game. PSG ended up with 10 men in both games. Ederson didn't even make a save as the defence was that good.

                      I'll be cheering for them.

The only reason I knew is that I looked at the full list of finalists last week after watching ESPN FC talking about the ESL and they mentioned some of the clubs who had won the EC but aren't "big clubs" anymore. Clubs like Red Star, Steaua București etc.

The other news of the day is that Mourinho didn't stay unemployed for long. He is the new manager of Roma.

my bet on Chelsea to win the whole thing from before the quarters is looking pretty handy

Manchester becomes the 5th city to have two different European Cup / Champions League finalists.

Four are easy - whats the 5th?

And the 6th will be Nottingham! Might take a few years though .....

                                          🤣

In all seriousness Rome would be obvious choice if Lazio ever have one of those seasons.
