@nepia there's some good coffee in Wellington. And Adelaide. And Sydney-although then you have to deal with inner city Sydney types..
But to diss Melbourne coffee as "is the biggest myth perpetuated in Australia" is not to know Australia (let alone its politics)..

I live in inner city Sydney and regularly travel to Melbourne - Melbourne coffee being awesome is a myth. Just because you have cafes run by mafia looking people doesn't mean the coffee is any good. πŸ˜‰

you are going to the wrong Melbourne cafes.

Ah, that old chestnut, great coffee in Melbourne if you can find the right cafes. 🧐

As to mafia-looking, I could not wear my black leather jacket in Leichhardt Sydney (when I lived there, back when it actually made good Italian coffee) because everyone looked at me with fear in their eyes..

Jesus, I'd be lucky to get by without reaching double digits - when I worked in Sydney, my weekly coffee budget was around $200, plus the extra ones I'd get for loyalty cards etc. I even had a sign on my desk not to approach or talk to me unless they were certain I'd had my second coffee.

One of the pleasant things about returning to Welly after 20+ years away was to see that Midnight Espresso and Deluxe (by the embassy) were still going strong.

One thing Allpress have always done is make sure that any place using their coffee is trained properly. That was a godsend in London where a majority of places were as awful as Costa. Plenty of good places once you knew where they were but if somewhere new and taking a chance there was an 80% chance of shit.

I'm a fan of Supreme Boxer Blend. It just seems to marry well with my machine at home. The best thing though is that I can usually get it no more than a few days old and my setup works much much better with really freshly roasted. Probably just because I am a tight arse on buying a grinder and have modded a domestic Bodum one to get the grind I need.

I believe the big growth market that beverage companies are targeting is cold coffee. I don't quite see it but Costa was brought out for millions just to get a recognised brand to put on cans.
Will be interesting to see where they take the brand.

When I was in Japan we drunk heaps of canned coffee. They even had hot canned coffee out of the vending machine which I thought was very cool

Can't really comment on relative merits of coffee but can say Hervey Bay does have a great little coffee roastery which makes really nice coffee.

    http://www.misscocoascoffeeherveybay.com

    Just saw this too:
    https://miss-cocoas-coffee-roastery-drive-thru.business.site/

(So there's only two coffee outlets in Melbourne who are better?)

But seriously why is Melbourne coffee so great?

    @crucial

The convenience market is the key one here and people are starting to demand higher quality coffee and β€˜branded’ images.

Hasn't everyone agreed that's a myth? I mean it isn't like every single coffee I've had in any city is consistently at a certain level.

I've had some good coffee all over the place, and some fairly ordinary muck as well.

Small sample size, but when I've been in Italy I've had great espresso. Haven't been back for over 10 years now, but last time I was in France everyone was using automatic machines where before it was hand made. Thought that was a bit lazy

No one seemed to agree with me when I stated it, but you're getting the likes now. πŸ˜‰

In Italy, a morning espresso at the local cafe is a ritual. I've never had a bad coffee there myself. No idea about flat whites - not my thing. πŸ™‚
