    Today's CNI games:

St John's Hastings just got hammered by St John's Hamilton (12 - 57). Not really a surprise.

I'm now watching Lindisfarne College v Feilding HS via https://sideline.live/play/14601

    Lindisfarne line-up:

    1. Jack Hamilton
    2. Kingshouse Tupuala
    3. Jasper Wallace
    4. Tom Druzianic
    5. Patrick Tuifua
    6. Lanson Randell
    7. Tino Savea
    8. Tams Heather
    9. Quinn Stevens
    10. Monte Timu
    11. Charlie Roil
    12. Tuawhio Porima
    13. Taylor Topp
    14. Grayson Hesketh
    15. Matawhero Wakefield Sciascia
    16. Bruno Wylie
    17. Hugh Kilsby
    18. Jonty Good
    19. Jonty Roil
    20. George Newman
    21. Tom Goodisson

I don't know whether openside Tino Savea is related to Jules and Ardie, but he's a strong unit, who just scored a good try.

Bad high tackle on a Lindisfarne player now leading to lots of handbags ...

Both captains get a stern talk from the ref and Feilding's openside cops a yellow. That could have been more.

Lindisfarne's hooker loves a driving maul. He's rewarded with a try, although it took the ref almost 10 seconds to see what you could easily see on screen: the hooker holding the ball firmly on the line.

Savea would do well in football, too. Bringing Lindisfarne right back to Feilding's 22 with a good kick. It pays off. A few phases later, lock Druzianic scores off the scrum.

    HT: Lindisfarne 22 - 3 Feilding HS

I'm pleasantly surprised. I expected Feilding to dominate this game.

Edited: oops, it wasn't quite half time yet. They play on.

Feilding's kicker misses a shot at goal after Mr Savea (I think) gave away a penalty. Now, it's really half time, without change to the score.

Lindisfarne's forwards are making this game, but a good exception is their no. 10, who's taking good decisions and has a promising kicking game. He's been on the receiving end of a few high tackles though.

Another good try to Tino Savea. I couldn't see who did the goal kicking during the first half (couldn't see the jersey number), but this try was converted by the fullback.

    Lindisfarne leads 34 to 10.

Lindisfarne has made some subs, including at hooker, and there's been a significant drop in level. Feilding is making a comeback!

Lindisfarne still leads 34 to 20.

I'm slightly confused. I still see Lindisfarne's hooker on the field. He must have been moved to another position. Their number 16 definitely has played at hooker since he came on. Loves a driving maul, too, but isn't as powerful.

Edited to add that no. 2Tupuala has moved to no. 8.

Full time: Lindisfarne College 34 - 20 Feilding HS

Fun game to watch. I was really impressed with how Lindisfarne played, although it should be said that Feilding was really weak.

No doubt, St Paul's Collegiate and St John's Hamilton will sit at the top of the CNI by the end of the season, but I think Lindisfarne is good enough for a third/fourth spot in the comp.

The Lindisfarne players who impressed me most, you guessed it, were hooker Kingshouse Tupuala, openside flanker Tino Savea and lock Tom Druzianic. Not on the same level, but first five-eighth Monte Timu and fullback Matawhero Wakefield Sciascia looked the best in the backline.

Maybe the Jaffas scholarship programme is working a bit better this season and Fielding Ag are still at the same strength as they have been these last few seasons!

@stargazer @nepia The fullback has a good Porangahau name if ever there was one.

Yep, looking at some of the names on that team list I assumed that was Hastings. Ta$man-farne scholarships back in full force. 🤣

Hastings Boys have been very quiet on social media this year, so I'm not sure they'll post a team line-up.

    Super 8
    Hasting Boys beat Palmerston North Boys: 23 - 13 (HT: 10 - 7)
    Napier Boys beat Gisborne Boys: 27 - 20 (HT: 15 - 19)

    CNI
    Lindisfarne beat Francis Douglas: 47 - 18

If you try to watch 2 games at the same time, you obviously miss a lot, but here are a few first impressions.

Hastings Boys were clearly the better team; especially in the first half, they spent a lot of time in Palmy's half. But Palmy's defence was good and kept Hastings from dominating on the scoreboard. The first time Palmy Boys came into Hastings' 22, they scored a try. Fortunately, Hastings scored a try of their own (their openside scored) and went into the break with a 10 - 7 lead. In the second half, the teams were less parked in Palmy's half, but Hastings managed to keep them try-less, with their own second five scoring the only (converted) try of the second half. Discipline became a bit of an issue for both teams and it was Hastings who lost that same no. 12 to the bin. Both teams slotted two penalty goals, making it 23 -13 at full time.

Napier Boys should have won with a bigger margin, but their ball handling let them down a bit, esp in the first half, with one sloppy pass leading to an intercept try to Gisborne Boys. If their work on that, they'll be a lot better for it. In the first half, their scrum went really well, but they were dominated in the second half when the subs had come on. All in all, Napier played a smarter game, made the better decisions, had a well-functioning line-out (stealing a few). Their goalkicker missed a few conversion attempts. Good first win, but still lots of work-ons for Napier.

It was hard to look at individual players, the way I was watching the games. I saw more of Napier's game, because it started half an hour late. Stand-outs were their backrow players Mead, Ratcliffe and Gilgal Leutele Malasia, who's a big, strong lad. No. 10 Gillies needs to work on his kicking, but he managed the game well. Gus Brown looked strong in the starting frontrow.

I still haven't been able to find a squad list/team sheet of Hastings Boys, which is a pain in the backside if you want to look at individual players. Cooper Flanders is the captain, by the way.

If I can find the time, I'll watch the games again.

I haven't seen the result of the St John's game, yet.

Article about today's game between Napier and Hastings Boys, particularly about the Leutele Malasia twins.

    https://cdn.hbapp.co.nz/sport/sport/will-it-be-case-of-double-trouble-in-nbhs-hbhs-clash

    Teams for today's 12noon encounter:
Napier Boys' High School: 15 Sam Kanthavong, 14 Adam Curran, 13 Bethel Leutele Malasia (vice captain), 12 Kaitiaki Broughton, 11Korie Paio, 10 Afa Moleli, 9Joel Russell, 8 Gilgal Leutele Malasia (captain), 7 Max Ratcliffe (vice captain), 6 Lochi Mead, 5 Guy von Dadelszen, 4 Nicholas Ennor, 3 Gus Brown, 2 Tyrone Chrystal, 1 Jared Martin.
Substitutes: 16 Tulitaluai Faleiva, 17 Ta$man Soanai Oeti, 18 William Rickey, 19 George Manson, 20 Jovian Cleal, 21 Tim Slabbekoorn, 22 Dougal Kerr.

Hastings Boys' High School: 15 Bryson Crawford-Pakoti, 14 Josiah Sakaria, 13 Mefi Tupou, 12 Tali Ioasa, 11 Alex Dickey, 10 Hoera Stephenson, 9 Phillip King-Panapa, 8 Cooper Flanders (captain), 7 James Pese, 6 Kaihau Pasikala, 5 Taufa Kaufononga, 4 Tom Allen, 3 Avian Rihia, 2 Josh Rautahi, 1 Aone Lolofie.
Substitutes: 16 Vikta Tevita, 17 John Palu, 18 Josh Leach, 19 Osca Ritchie, 20 Jordi Viljoen, 21 Preston Whatarau, 22 Bryson Ioane.

On paper, I'd say Napier Boys has the stronger team. The battle between the two number 8s will be interesting. Gilgal is staying in the Bay according to the article; I hoper Cooper stays, too. Our no. 8 factory is still strong, and I'd like to see both stay in the Academy, but the poachers will be licking their lips, although they may only know Cooper.

    St John's expectedly lost to St Paul's: 12 - 38.

    After 33 minutes, it's 3 - 3 between Napier and Hastings Boys.
    Terrible, wet weather.
