So who thinks this is going ahead next year?

"Tokyo reported 572 new infections on Wednesday – its second-highest daily figure since the pandemic began – following a record 584 infections on Saturday. The capital, the worst-hit region in Japan with a total of almost 45,000 cases, is due to host the Olympic Games in just over six months’ time, with test events scheduled to resume as early as the first week of March"

@Machpants I have strong doubts; already had them before this latest outbreak in Japan. Simply because there are still so many countries with new cases. also among their sports teams.

I think it will only go ahead if players and staff are all vaccinated or go through a lengthy quarantine (lengthy, to allow possibly infected players to recover), and then still they risk playing in empty stadiums.

I'm sure that if it happens, it will be something like this.

I do know that some planning is already underway here (related to my work) but I'm sceptical that they can put on a 'full' games with spectators from other countries.

My guess: It happens with no crowds and some events cancelled.

WADA does not appeal CAS decision regarding Russian Anti-Doping Agency to Swiss Federal Tribunal

Following the passing of the deadline to appeal the December 2020 decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), which ruled in favor of WADA and declared RUSADA non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code, WADA confirms that it did not appeal the CAS decision to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

WADA was disappointed that the CAS Panel, based on its own assessment of proportionality, decided not to impose all the consequences that WADA sought (and not for the full four-year period). However, the grounds of appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal are limited to procedural matters such as jurisdiction, the composition of the Panel and the right to be heard. The Swiss Federal Tribunal does not conduct a review of the merits and would therefore not interfere with the Panel's assessment of the proportionality of the consequences. As a result, and following unanimous advice from in-house and external legal counsels, WADA strongly believes an appeal would have served no useful purpose and decided to refrain from doing so.

By the way, with the remaining two-year ban, Russia cannot compete as a nation at the Olympics in Tokyo and Winter Games in Beijing 2022, although its athletes can compete as neutrals.

However, if the 2021 and 2022 Games are postponed, they'll escape any sanction, it seems. Maybe they should have imposed a ban for the "next two Olympic Games" instead (if legally possible)?

No international fans for the delayed Tokyo Olympics because of COVID fears.

          https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/56461152

No international fans will be permitted at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this summer because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, organisers say.

Japanese authorities told the Olympic and Paralympic committees it was "highly unlikely that entry" to the country could be guaranteed.

Organisers said the move would help ensure "a safe and secure Games for all participants and the Japanese public".

The Games are due to begin on 23 July.

The Paralympics follow the Olympics a month later, from 24 August.

Organiser said they had made the move to bar overseas spectators "in order to give clarity to ticket holders", who will be refunded.

They added that the "challenging" Covid-19 situation in Japan and many other countries, global travel restrictions and emergence of variant strains of the virus had led to the decision.

Organisers postponed the Olympics by a year in March last year because of the growing spread of coronavirus across the world.

It is the first time in the event's history it has been postponed, with more than 11,000 athletes from around 200 countries scheduled to take part in 2020.

Lightweight sculler Zoe McBride retires on her own terms, while it looks like Mahe Drysdale has had that decision made for him as he has not been selected to the 2021 Rowing NZ elite men's team.

McBride's story (with video) is worth reading.

I quite like Brisbane, as a little city. But, as an Olympics destination? I think that proves that we should have one place host the summer Olympics and one the Winter. Enough of this shit.

Good opportunity to recall Greece's Olympics...

                                  Que?

Remember the concerns regarding their preparations?

Brisbane's ability to do major work on time isn't much better.

Looks like we will see another "home" Olympics in 11 years time

If only John Clarke was still alive to do "The Games II".

Expect to see Australia's hardline immigration ideals bent for anyone with medal prospects.

I went to school in Brisbane, moved away for 12 years but have been back since 2013. Absolutely love the place but the Olympics??? Fark off. The infrastructure here is shit and wtf are we supposed to do with an 80k seater stadium? Yeah that won’t be a white elephant. It will probably also attract more of the arsehold “Mexicans” from down south who will sell their 5 million dollar 2 bedroom shitholes and price out the poor pricks up here.

There is the argument that the Olympics will mean that they will finally have to solve all the problems re infrastructure etc but it’s absolutely ridiculous to think that hosting the Olympics requires those measures to be taken.

No, Brisbane is a Commonwealth Games city not an Olympic city. Delusions of grandeur.

Melbourne is the obvious choice, Sydney had it more recently

guess how much infrastructure Far North Queensland is getting in the next decade?

The Qld government better hope countries still want to buy what we dig out of the ground, AND interest rates stay low for ever. AND we don't shut the world down again.

But what do they care? Paluch-chook gets to triumphantly announce that Qld has won the Olympics, the details are someone else's problem.

Stop bitching. Townsville got a new stadium and the origin. All the important stuff.
