I've been listening to the latest Kansas album over the last few weeks. No Steve Walsh anymore.

I’m shocked they’re still going, I woulda thought they hadn’t released anything in about 40 years

Kansas aren't a legacy act like many other bands from the 1970s and 80s. They've released 2 albums with their new singer in the last 5 years.

Fair enough, can’t say they’re a group I’ve ever thought about too much.

Serendipitously Spotify misheard me the other day and as a result I discovered Tape 5 a German electro swing project

Even with a bunch of kids singing this still sounds fresher, funkier and cooler than anything they’ve done in over 20 years. Unmistakable groove from these two.

Perhaps Anthony and Chad have held them back all this time ?

Or because the source material is great?

Dave Allen is a very underrated bassist while Flea is a touch overrated. (IMO of course)

Flea is good but I’d agree.

Most overrated would be Jack Bruce or John Entwistle

I always think it is unfair to compare the Ox with others. His style was so unique that there is little to go by to decide if he is good at it (if you get what I mean). Did some amazing stuff though.

Yeah no one else did that typewriter stuff he did. He didn’t really keep it in the pocket so to speak, Townsend did that instead.

Loved this album when it came out. I flattened many a battery playing this on my Walkman.
Reckless had so many great songs, this one, Summer of 69’ but it was the ballads that got the most play..

I’ve been giving a listen to some of the new Dolby Atmos content on Apple Music. I know it’s probably going to annoy some of the purists by I’m sold. Just been listening to Grover Washington’s Just The Two of Us from Winelight and it is astonishing. Grab a pair of headphones and jump on in.

I've told the story before that I got to go to the Dolby HQ a couple of years back andthey gave us atmos demos on movies and home theatre. I spent the whole time thinking about the possibilities with music.
I reckon rock music is 'forward facing' and doesn't really need it but jazz and classical or more avant-garde stuff had amazing possibilities. For instance you could be in the conductors position in front of a full orchestra with instrument placing around you.
Very cool stuff and the biggest change in how producers will think since stereo.

@crucial They’ve got a new Atmos version of Shorter’s Juju on there which is worth a listen. I couldn’t listen to the CD Stereo version, too harsh but this is quite different. You get a real sense for how much of the density of the original version is actually just Elvin Jones’s playing. Of course if you’re not fussed about jazz then this is something to really hate.

@virgil 🙌🏻 Heaven is so good. The mtv unplugged album he did was good too, all of the goodies live. I'm Ready is one of my faves too.

You know when I was a kid I was convinced he and Marty McFly were one and the same person. Was disappointed to find out they weren't.

Got around to updating the phone and having a listen. Going through some of the curated examples.

There is a good introduction on there using 'What's Going On' in mono, stereo and atmos. The atmos mix is nice and subtle (although the accidental Detroit MIx is still my favourite version of that track. Takes Gaye's double tracked vocals and mixes them as if dueting with himself).
Also had a listen to George Benson's'Give me the night' and dreamed I was sitting next to Q at the desk.
