Surprised we didn't start with Jamieson and Boult TBH, not that CDG and Wags bowled badly but we should be giving the ball to our strike bowlers when it's still relatively new.

That would apply with the Kookaburra but the Duke is swinging nicely for CdG Pace and Wags was bowling well and took a wicket in that spell

As I said CDG didn't bowl badly but he's not a strike bowler. Boult is, and got a wicket (nearly 2) in his first over.

but he does seem to trouble Kohli historically and drew a couple of false shots

Not sure why or why not currently, but CDG's best work is at first change, while Wags' best work is at second change. Not sure how that plays out now with Jamieson though.

I have been impressed by the discipline of CDG after his early issues with line

We were definitely right to not bother with a spinner. All of the Indians average nearly 70 against spin.

Amplified by winning the toss and inserting them.

Runout chance for one of those wickets I mentioned

India will be pretty happy at 100/3 with Kohli set.

Well, could have been a hell of a lot better given the conditions and the quality of our attack. But, we have both their openers and can have a good crack at Pujara and Kohli after lunch.

Kyle was superb. He's such a tough bowler to face in tests; difficult to score off without taking undue risk and has the ability to get the ball to bounce, swing both ways, and move off the seam. He's going to be a key man for us.

We really need Boult and Southee to come to the party in the second session. They are the senior bowlers and should be taking the bull by the horns. Park cricketer is good for breaking partnerships but he can't bowl long spells, he's just not consistent enough.

Overall I give India the advantage given they had to bat first. But it's still in the balance, a couple of quick wickets after lunch and she's all on.

I’m not sure if it could’ve been that much better. This looks a really interesting wicket. Let’s not forget this is a quality batting side we are bowling too. We have been working hard to keep the runs hard to come by.

You wouldn't mind Matt Henry here.

Even though we didn't take more wickets at least we were able to slow their scoring. India weren't able to take the game away from us

They really missed a trick not selecting Santner for some variation.

A strangely anti-climatic day after being at Edgebaston last Sat. Nice, picturesque ground but very sterile atmosphere and gloomy as fuck. All day. They did a series of random and strange polls at the ground throughout the day; the first one being ‘who will win?’ I picked that 95 % would be in favour of India given the demographic of the crowd. Answer was 80% so I guess even a few of their supporters didn’t really give a fuck.

Pitch looks a touch on the slow side.

Lack of atmosphere looks like it has impacted us. We looked a bit sloppy in the field and some of the bowling was a bit underwhelming.

Speak for yourself. I’ve had enough pies in my life thanks.

I’m also not a fan of inaccurate bowlers.

I think, in a normal game the test is reasonably evenly poised - but, in reality, I think India has their noses in front.

In the WTC Final, runs on the board are worth more than usual and they have some. Plus they have probably almost defused our best chance of winning - which was to run through their top order in the first innings.

Starting to look like it will be a four day test, which means one team will have to fall in a heap somewhere to lose - and India are a fair way towards avoiding that in their first innings.

Not all is lost, but I reckon we need to come out this evening and knock a couple of them over quickly - bowling them out for 250 would still be a good result.

Agreed. Given the timeframe available, I’m surprised that the comments on here are as positive as they are. I think they’ve blown any chance of winning, and if India puts up a good score this evening we’ll be one Black Caps’ collapse away from a very good chance of losing it.

India still have a very capable keeper batsman and two all rounders to come who all have the potential to frustrate the fuck out of us with runs.

Oh and Kohli is still in.

India definitely comfortably on top, they'll be thrilled with that return - best player still out there and only 3 down. The only thing giving us a sniff is their slow run rate, but we're going to have to take 7 for 100 odd to really get back into it. And then we have to bat in really tough conditions against a world class attack.
