This is not pretty to watch. Up in Cairns where it’s wet and humid and if the ball doesn’t find the hand it’s a mess.

Exactly the kind of stuff that turns people off the sport .

Wet yes, it was a bit drizzly yesterday. It's not humid at all though, and was pretty chilly last night

It was still 20+ degrees during the 2nd half which neither of these two teams would be used to at 9pm at night.

                  Weekend wrap

Port will host a final but aren't in Premiership contention. I may have been seriously wrong about Geelong
                  Sydney, that's awful
Questions need to be asked at the Suns
Lol @ teh Saints. They are allergic to winning
                  Poor North just cannot win
Richmond are making it very hard on themselves. While West Coast really fucking needed that
So either Bucks didn't lose the players, or they were trying real hard so the new guy picked them next week. Either way Melbourne should have been ready for that ambush

AFL has decided to give themselves a test case. Two players going very very hard at a ground ball have collided, one has got a broken jaw. AFL has sent it straight to the tribunal with no charge. The outcome could change the fabric of the game.

                      Gold Coast lose, again

And the totally not agenda-driven Victorian media fuckheads start beating the "fold the Suns and move them to Tassie" drum

Hey David King you fuckwit, firstly, you are the dumbest "analyst" on fox footy by the length of the Flemington straight. But most importantly, that dogshit club you come from has won less games in 2 years than the Suns have this year. Why don't we move them to Tassie?

Hey Carlton fans. how's that talk of winning a final going for you? You have the same number of wins as the Suns. Your club has been irrelevant for the best part of 2 decades. Maybe we fuck them off as well? In fact, getting rid of two teams in Melbourne is probably great for the comp. Lets do that.

Basically the Suns are underperforming, but, even the media seems to think they are reliant on the form of a 19 year old with half a dozen games under his belt. That's fucking retarded. It's a team of young players, all with talent. Questions should be asked as to why they are not more competitive, but to expect them to win a lot more games given their list seems churlish.

@mariner4life But they've always had good young talent. The problem is most of them move back to Melbourne the first moment they are able to.

I'm not sure they should be moved to Tassie, but certainly a Tassie team should be very much on the AFL agenda. As is the future of the Gold Coast, who at the moment only serve to develop talent for other teams.

Anyone who suggests putting an existing team in Tassie is ignoring two fundamental issues:

                          1. They already support a team.
                          2. Hobart or Launceston? Put it in one and it won't be supported well by the other.

@antipodean I disagree on both counts. They only support a team because they are footy fans and want some skin in the game. They'd flock to get behind a local team IMO.

And I think they'd share games between the two locations, and I think any intra-state rivalry would be trumped by their rivalry with Victoria and the mainland in general.

and i am somewhere between the two of you

I work with a couple of tasmanians (living in Vic) and they were both the same, they would always support their current team (both Geelong) but they would 100% get behind a Tassie team and they think their families back in Tassie would do the same, kids i tink would all change to the local team

@antipodean The Port analogy is not the same though, that's a footy rivalry that dates back a long way. There's no such rivalry on the island between the two cities.

I've got family down there who would definitely get behind a local team. They are Bombers fans, but at very least they will support both rather than reject the local side.

Every Tasmanian I know says otherwise. As a Tasmania said to me when I mentioned I was going back to the Tamar Valley, he said I'd have been to Launceston more times than most people from Hobart. I'm also struggling to think of successful teams that continuously move their home games to appease a disparate fan base.

Everyone says they'd support it, the same way they "support" a lot of things but actually expect they're giving voice to the majority opinion.

@antipodean Ok we'll have to agree to disagree. I find the concept that a local Tassie side wouldn't get sufficient local support to fill their (relatively small) grounds to be completely bizarre.

romantically Tassie should get a side, it's a footy state.

                                        but

these decisions are not romantic, they are commercial. Are the AFL going to get more money from a Tassie team than they get from hawks and North games in Tassie? Is it a growth market? How high is the commercial ceiling? What corporate partners exist to get on board? Will a Tassie team get more kids playing AFL?

Also, how does an 19th team change the broadcasting landscape?

The Suns kick nearly all of these goals for the AFL across an entire state. I have said before, i live 2,000kms from Suns headquarters. and yet they are doing the heavy lifting up here developing young AFL players. GWS in Western Sydney will be doing the same thing. These are good long-term investments for AFL House. Can Tassie say the same thing?

@mariner4life And that's the heart of this whole debate. It's so interesting, because it cuts right to the heart of what sport is in 2021.

Tassie is a no-brainer from a passion standpoint. Slightly more questionable from a talent standpoint, but if money was no object they'd have a team tomorrow. BUT despite the AFL raking in billions of dollars every year, money is still a massive part of their decision making process.
