@Damo @MajorRage @Chris-B some pretty optimistic scenarios you fullas are throwing out ๐Ÿ˜€

Given the way this pitch is playing and the quality of both sides, it seems a draw is the only likely outcome.

Why is this game not set up so that it goes on until youโ€™ve had five days of play or a result?

Wow, what an incredible scorecard to wake up to. Based on the scorecard alone we are well on top, however, given the conditions being well on top can change to being well behind within the space of 30 minutes, so it's still right in the balance. Really great test so far, you know both teams will be mentally shattered at the conclusion given the war of attrition this has been - batmen being given nothing by the bowlers, but at the same time making the bowlers work hard to get their wicket.

Kyle is just incredible for someone so young. He has all of the physical attributes, but more importantly mentally he seems made for test cricket. Just gives the batsmen absolutely nothing, and forces them to take big risks if they want to score off him. Moves it both ways, hits the seam hard, and gets plenty of awkward bounce. He must be an absolute nightmare to face, and he absolutely dominated the Indian top order. And the scariest part about him is that he will only improve from here...

Special shout out to BJ behind the stumps as well - he has been absolutely superb in really challenging conditions.

        The rest of the bowlers:

        • Boult was really, really good. Had the Indian batsmen under huge pressure trying to guess which balls would go across them, and which would hoop back in. Absolutely did Jadeja as well and really deserved that wicket.
        • Southee well below his best but still a threat given how much swing he was getting. Hoping he makes amends in the second innings.
        • Wags, we love Wags. Just so insanely consistent. A genuine threat swinging the ball, and can attack the batsmen with the shorter stuff if needed - loved the way he bought Rahane's wicket. I know it looked like Rahane just fell into an easy trap, but given how much concentration was needed to bat out there, setting that trap and chucking a few short balls his way was really smart cricket and Rahane couldn't mentally adjust quickly enough.
        • CDG was good, but is not really a threat the way the other bowlers are. I think we over bowled him in the end, although he got past the edge a few times the Indians looked by far the most comfortable batting time against him. We should use him sparingly only.

Awesome platform has now been laid by the openers taking the shine off the ball. The Indians can't swing it like us so rely more on seam movement, which will decrease as the ball gets older. It's the spinners that worry me the most, they just come at you all day long waiting for a small mistake to pounce.

Huge chance for our two best players to take this game by the scruff of the neck and put us in a really dominant position. As others have said, a lead of even 50 will be significant, but ideally we want to push that past 100 if possible.

If both sides decide to play for it, I totally agree.

My scenario's only work if one side (leaning towards us as the current batting side), decides to go for it. If I was in charge, my aims would be this

          1. Try and bat 45 overs tomorrow. That should take us to drinks in sessions 2 & we should be relative parity from here
          2. Anything above this should be a lead. Impossible to assess what this should be without seeing conditions and the wicket tomorrow. BUT, regardless of anything, India should be batting at the end of the day. For at least 10 overs.

Make no mistake, they probably have the best batting line up to block it out. Conditions won't be great. Likely overcast and humid.

          Wagner time.

Most likely for sure - but I still think India are a little bit vulnerable with this being their first test in English conditions.

On their first test on the last English tour they were bowled out twice under 130 and lost by an innings. Their first test on the last tour of Australia they were skittled for 36 in the second innings. Could it happen here?

Freaky stuff can happen in England like Broad's effort in Nottinghamshire or the first innings of Ireland's first test - I don't count us out if we get a roll on.

I'd come out and go for it tonight NZT. Every chance we get score parity it's just a matter of how quickly and how many wickets we lose. If we're all out for 200 then we'll see what Kohli is made of as a captain. If we get to 200 quickly and with wickets in hand then we can take this game by the scruff of its fucking neck and try to force a result. If they roll us for another 50 it's still on India to make a game of it but our chances of winning will have diminished.

Yeah - it's got harder with losing all of last night - and it looks like the sun might actually come out on the last day, which might mitigate against us really swinging it around.

The TAB is now saying draw $1.27, NZ $3.85, India $16

If we bat well in the first session that India $16 is going to get a lot bigger very quickly!!!

We've just about got one hand on the Cup lads. That might be all that we get - but, in my Jacobite view of the CWC, we've got one hand on the ODI Cup as well. If the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune not so blatantly favoured the New Zealander, Stokes, King Kane would be safely ruling over that Empire as well!

We need KW and Ross to get set then up the rate with one to then stick around and be the backbone if we are going to up the ante here.

We don't need to go for it from ball one though. Just bat normally for the first session and hope to keep wickets in hand. All going well, we should have our noses in front an hour after lunch - and could still potentially bat for another 40 overs with a gradual acceleration.

All going according to my plan, ๐Ÿ™‚ we could be 200 ahead.

Leave the Indians a tricky little 10 overs before close of play - and hopefully another 98 overs tomorrow.

That's quite a few more overs than they batted in the first innings - and we have 10 wicket in the shed to slog any deficit at the end.

Sound plan. We have the bowling firepower to force a result. If there is assistance I'd like to think that Southee and Boult will be better next innings. The Indians struggle with Kylo, and Wags can manufacture something through his sheer will and his rage

In my view, the worst thing would be to try and force from the start if play does start on time tomorrow. It's a tough pitch to bat on and you have to work hard for your runs. NZ objective should be to bat all day, even if that is only to get to 350. Then see if India can cope with the fast bowler barrage for a whole day with no prospect of victory.

We need KW and Ross to get set then up the rate with one to then stick around and be the backbone if we are going to up the ante here.

It's the last bit that concerns me as a nervous nellie that we could go tits up chasing a small target if those footmarks come into play.
The first part is good but I reckon we need to chance our arm for 10-12 overs if possible and go the smash. 250 lead minimum.
I'd like to see them taken out of the win equation and trying to survive.
If nothing else we get the moral victory.
It annoys me that Kohli implied that this game means little as everyone already knows who the best team in the world is. I'd like that 'best team' to be fighting for a draw.

I think this article by Aussie arse kissing Pom Mark Nicholas sums up the coverage so far absolutely perfect.

Waxing lyrical about the Indian player consistently, disappointment when they get out, many an anecdote about pretty much so all teams that play the game apart from NZ, and then a couple of lines dropped in to mention the opposition (who are arguably ahead in this test).

Some of these aggressive strategies seem to overlook the relationship between whatever lead NZ is able to get and their ability to set and keep aggressive fields when bowling.

I think we want to try to play assertively but not recklessly. We are in the box seat right now, and we want to shut India out of winning the game. At the same time if we can put ourselves in a position to try and win then great. But we don't want to chase a win only to let them back in chance

I think the only way we lose from here is if we get bowled out very cheaply from here and then bowl the Indians out cheaply - and then get skittled chasing a very low score (ยฌ150).

But, I really want us to remain completely ascendant from here for similar reasons - zero suggestion that it was us saved by rain.
