She needs to sort out her Achilles tendon problem, otherwise her career is over.

there goes about 95% of the hotness from the NZ Olympic team.

If it likely turns to a giant covid poo, i can help feeling those who missed out will feel they dodged a bullet..

I think anyone who has dedicated their lives to this event will be willing to take that chance. The problem is that there will be something of an asterisks beside these games because of the postponement. Plenty of athletes who could have won medals 12 months ago are now a little past it while others who didn’t have much of a chance then are now medal contenders. The Aus swimming trials (and American too I believe) is a good example of that. Just think if the RWC of 2011 was postponed then BBBT might not have been there in 2012 but Aaron Smith and Ben Smith would have. 1 year can make a massive difference in sport.

A four year event will always have that problem. But yes, there will be athletes that had one last peak in them and couldn't get past the postponement (along with some for who 2020 was a year too early).

For many you get one shot at representing at an Olympics and I don't blame anyone for taking the risk and going to this one.

I wonder if Tokyo would've been better off not postponing the games. Sure, people wouldn't be vaccinated, but you wouldn't have the delta variant etc.

Embarrassing, just hope we don't medal in that event.

That has to be the most unlikely name for a kiwi soccer player.

@billy-tell There is quite a European flavour with the current generation of NZ footballers. George Stanger is the son of Tony and Scottish-born (Mum is a Kiwi).

Tony must be an absolute legend in Scotland. Pretty sure he scored the winning try to give Scotland a win over England + grand slam + 5N title.

The Olympic Games in Japan are to be held without spectators due to rising cases of coronavirus.

Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa made the announcement following discussions with officials and organisers on Thursday evening.

A state of emergency in Tokyo will run throughout the Games, to combat coronavirus.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters it would run from 12 July and remain in place until 22 August.

Bars and restaurants will not be allowed to serve alcohol and must close by 20:00 (11:00 GMT).

Coronavirus infections are rising in Tokyo as the 23 July opening ceremony edges closer.

There has been widespread opposition to the Games in Japan, with calls for them to be postponed or cancelled.

My interest in the olympics is I’d say 1/10. Complete dud for Japan, I feel sorry for them.

The vaccination effort really scaled up during July, then they ran out of vaccine and now in many places it's completely stopped.

Then they decided that we need another SOE, and the rationale for this SOE is the Olympics, which is really fucking off a lot of people - it's not the lack of spectators itself, but that fact that all entertainment is being shut down, so 'we're having the games, but no enjoying it, in fact, stay in your homes you peasants, while we spend your tax dollars on something you don't even want'.

So, the negative talk comes from two aspects - one is related to the government seemingly caring more about holding the games than Coronavirus, and the second is that they haven't really made a big enough effort to get people vaccinated, now they are going to lock everything down during the event (so that people can't go out and have a drink during the games).

That has to be so shit. It’s like hosting a massive party at your house and being locked in a cupboard. They should have either cancelled or spread the events around several countries. Would still be shit but better than the epic clusterfuuck that is unfolding.

Feel really sorry for Japan. Had everything ready in record time and now it’s just a big joke.

I'm really angry that last year they didn't just put everything back by four years (i.e., to 2024). The only issue would have been the athlete's village, but apart from that, all of the infrastructure could have been maintained and we would likely have a 'normal' games.

Maybe there are issues with the games being awarded to Paris in 2024? There are also massive amounts of money at play. At any rate, it’s so shit for Japan.

Not to mention all the athletes who'll be too old, or have already postponed important life events (female athletes postponing having children, for example) and would have to postpone them even longer if they want to participate.

I think things like the Olympics are important, and after the 18 months we've all had the morale boost will be welcomed. The world owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Japan. They are wearing the cost and risk with very little upside.
