England have a team to be proud of and with all the young talent coming through, they will be a good bet in future tournaments. Kyle Walker is their only player over 30.

Under pressure, Southgate needs to learn to trust attacking flair more. His team got far too defensive and parked the bus too early last night.

But I can't see England winning a major tournament without getting through a penalty shootout somewhere. The goalkeeper was superb last night. Employ a specialist coach to work with the penalty takers. I can't see the sense in giving the 5th penalty to a 19 year old. Trust your senior players and make clear with seniority come obligation.

Most importantly, there is still a huge societal issue to address in terms the moronic and racist element who crawl out from underneath rocks when the England football team do well. Ugly scenes in Leicester Square and around Wembley Stadium yesterday. Some vile racism online. Just horrible to read Black British parents posting online that they had worried about sending their kids to school this morning because of the racism they might face.

Is that because black players missed the penalties? If so that’s totally fucked up. But I do wish people would stop conflating things that happen online with the real world. The sewer that is Twitter and social media is thankfully not a reflection of the world we live in. God help us if it was.

Yeah still struggling to get my head around having the young fellas step up, and Grealish is ignored - isn't he captain of his club side?

I’ve always thought that penalty takers should be selected based on temperament and that strikers are not always the best in these situations. Andy Brehme took the penalty for Germany in the 1990 final and didn’t ManU always have that Mr Bean looking defender take their penalties (Irwin wasn’t it). Some of the best players in the world have bottled it. Sometimes your boring, plodding defender who never scores goals is better in that situation than a flashy striker.

Sterling should have been one of the penalty takers. Saka had never taken a penalty in a competitive game before.

I'm not sure why they don't crack down on it - maybe there's an element of it being part of the game that people are OK with? A feel like a lot of the complaints come from people that are not diehard fans.

There are reasons that they are not diehard fans. Me included. Diving is one of them.

Rugby is of course perfect. No problems with the laws, refs, nothing. All good.

One of the good things about Rugby is the respect players, spectators and officials seem to have for each other. I know that can sound sentimental and superior, but considering the amount of booze drunk at Rugby matches, it's pretty true. You get dickheads in any sport, but they seem to get called out more in Rugby.

I don't watch much soccer, but there does seem to be a bit less of the on-field dickhead-ness from players and managers there used to be and crowd behaviour seems pretty good compared to what it used to be. I like the way players and officials treat each other as now compared to what went on in the past.

@victor-meldrew whatever you do, don't watch a club game. The shit the players get away with in regards to treatment of officials is dire.

A problem with soccer is teams with a 1 goal lead in the closing minutes. Much like rugby had the problem with endless rucks (still a problem, but the 5s law and refs penalising for sealing off have helped), soccer had the endless pass backs to the keeper. Not allowing the keeper to pick the ball up was an improvement but it’s still an issue imo.

Good one about the Germans in penalty shootouts here. Haven’t missed one at world cups since 1982. Missed 4 overall and 3 of them were at the 2016 Euros.

England have developed a strong squad. But they played too negative. The early goal should have spurred them on, but instead they tried to settle and were ultimately punished as a result. How Grealish doesn't play a greater part in their line up I don't know

Case in point, Mbappe for France. And Maguire's rocket.

Italy had a better keeper but Pickford did well, arguably the blame lies with Southgate for picking the penalty takers. Grealish and Sterling should have been in that lineup.

Southgate has managed to forge team spirit into the squad, but I think he has taken them as far as he can go.

Epic, incredible week of sport. Huge atmosphere throughout the country and something we all needed after the nightmare of the last 18 months.

It wasn't to be at the end, and I'm feeling rather dejected today (i would say similar to 2007 RWC), but I can only look back on this entire tournament with happy memories for the way it made us all feel.

Truly magnificent, and one can only ponder the height it may have reached if the penalty shootout had gone a different way.
