    @rancid-schnitzel
Case in point, Mbappe for France. And Maguire's rocket.

Italy had a better keeper but Pickford did well, arguably the blame lies with Southgate for picking the penalty takers. Grealish and Sterling should have been in that lineup.

Southgate has managed to forge team spirit into the squad, but I think he has taken them as far as he can go.

Epic, incredible week of sport. Huge atmosphere throughout the country and something we all needed after the nightmare of the last 18 months.

It wasn't to be at the end, and I'm feeling rather dejected today (i would say similar to 2007 RWC), but I can only look back on this entire tournament with happy memories for the way it made us all feel.

Truly magnificent, and one can only ponder the height it may have reached if the penalty shootout had gone a different way.

@sparky oh Southgate has said it's all on himself and he chose the shot takers, I'm just surprised that's even in question - I would've thought that's a given.

England have developed a strong squad. But they played too negative. The early goal should have spurred them on, but instead they tried to settle and were ultimately punished as a result. How Grealish doesn't play a greater part in their line up I don't know

Southgate has done a good job to get them where they are now, especially building discipline and a team first mentality. But they now need a better coach to build on the foundations he’s laid and actually harness the fantastic talent they’ve got

I personally think he should be kept on until the World Cup next year. Then see about his future.

He’s the first coach since 50 odd years to get them to a final, albeit via a poor Germany, a hapless Ukraine and a solid but unspectacular Denmark. But English have generally been rubbish in tournament football.

Actually, England have a pretty good record in major tournaments, regularly reaching the semi-final or quarter final stage. The problem has been getting further than that...and penalties.

Not sure about Sterling taking a pen. Rashford and Sancho are regular penalty takers but I wouldn't want Sterling anywhere near one.

Southgate has to stay on for the World Cup. He's shown he can build a strong squad, get them playing to a pattern and he sticks with the players he trusts. No frantic panics of previous managers.

But the formation he uses against the top teams reverts to 7 at the back under pressure and England find themselves without the ball and no method to get up the pitch.

Kane is playing more and more like Sheringham but he doesn't have a Shearer ahead of him. Italy realised they just needed to crowd out England attacks to get the ball back.

Not sure on Grealish yet. He needs to play for a club in Europe and learn to move the ball on more. His default is to get the ball and move with it but he then gets crowded out.

Jack Grealish captains a club with the best spirit of any club side on earth where he is idolised and which he supported as a kid. He created more chances than any England player in this tournament apart from Sterling. Villa's goalkeeper just won the Copa America. Not sure why he should move.

I'm not saying he should move, just that he needs to play at the highest level at a better team where he isn't the main star. England didn't create many chances and Grealish only came on as a sub when the games were more open.

I actually think he is a great player but England can't build a side around him right now.

I also think Rashford should move or else he needs a coach who will get the best out of his talents.

I’ve always thought that penalty takers should be selected based on temperament and that strikers are not always the best in these situations. Andy Brehme took the penalty for Germany in the 1990 final and didn’t ManU always have that Mr Bean looking defender take their penalties (Irwin wasn’t it). Some of the best players in the world have bottled it. Sometimes your boring, plodding defender who never scores goals is better in that situation than a flashy striker.

Bonucci's penalty was good too for a defender.

If you take a penalty the best options are smashing the ball into the top corner or passing the ball along the floor into the side netting. Anything 1 m or so off the ground is easier for the GK to get a hand to. Even Jorginho missed.

Wow, talk about putting yourself on a non existent pedestal.

Cardiff and Swansea fans are very famous for being such lovely people.

                                    Dickheads everywhere, nobody is immune.

Very true, but at national level we’ve been good boys

                                    Especially in other people’s houses

Speaking of pedestals, it must be nice to have massive public support after failing so spectacularly on the second biggest stage - mainly looking at Southgate here but the players too. Imagine if the fans had been well-behaved and the racist had kept their thoughts to themselves - knives would well and truly be out.

Not sure they failed spectacularly. They all but won the tournament and lost narrowly to a very strong Italian outfit. They certainly came nearer to winning a big championship than a England football has done in more than 50 years.

The England squad is young and will always get better. Phil Foden and Jaden Sancho in particularly have the talent to become world-class players. Stones and Maguire will last another six years. They were missing the injured Liverpool duo of Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold. I think they can approach Qatar 2022 and Germany 2024 with a lot of confidence.

Wrong choice of words, failing so dramatically?

It was a choke anyway, even if they weren't the better side, they choked. I actually think they had a very good side and will be one of the favourites for the world cup. Need a different manager though in my opinion, but now he is seemingly in the clear.
