Watched Trey Lance play his first preseason game today.

Overall pretty much as expected. The physical talent is there - he popped with an 80 yard touchdown for his first completion.

As a top 3 pick at QB you want to see some wow plays. He delivered one.

A lot to work on but I don't think he's that far off as a starting option as the 49ers starters are a hell of a lot better than their backups - between no running game support, receivers dropping passes and the O line being a sieve he didn't get much help at all out there.

Yeah it was pretty much everything that he could be and all the reasons why he might never be. 5/14 for 128 yards and a TD is a good debut. 4/13 for 40 yards not so great.

I don't think he'll see the field much this year and that will be good for him. He's played very little college ball so will really benefit from the development time to work out his rough edges.

Of the 5 qbs that went in round one it's looking like only Wilson and Lawrence will be day one starters. Jones and Fields will probably get starts during the season and I suspect Lance will too. I think Garroppolo is slightly below league average as QB so if the 49ers struggle (especially if their defence can't keep the offence in reasonably friendly situations) he'll look out of his depth and the pressure to start Lance will grow, especially if he has a solid preseason.

Also, even weirder than Rodgers wanting out, i saw a post that Tim Tebow will head to the Jags. As a tightend. Now, i reckon he should have pivoted to TW as soon as it became apparent he wasn't going to make it as a QB. Big guy, good feet. But that was 10 years ago! How come Kap can't get a gig again?

aaaaaand Tebow has been cut by the Jags.

Teams only have to cut down to 85 players this week. They have to cut down to 53 for the season.

So Tebow didn't make the 85. In other words - he didn't even get close.

Sideshow over. Meyer loves Tim so much, maybe Tebow said no mas after his preseason performance

After slow start, Lance ends night with 2 TD drives

After slow start, Lance ends night with 2 TD drives

Trey Lance's second preseason game went a lot like his first one -- in reverse. After struggling to find a rhythm early against the Chargers on Sunday, the 49ers rookie QB recovered to finish 8-of-14 for 102 yards and two touchdowns with an interception.

Lance has a bullet arm, reminds me of Kaepernick, hopefully more accurate. I hope they don't make him start, let him ease in

@canefan it's also obvious they are using preseason as an opportunity to teach and coach him - they aren't making it easy on him - they are forcing him to hang in the pocket and read/throw - obviously they think he can handle it and that in the long run it will be good for his development. They aren't giving away packages that they will use Lance in during the regular season as initially a package/gadget QB on specific plays (QB runs, moving the pocket etc).

Whilst I understand the idea of easing Lance in, the reality is sooner or later he's going to have to start and he's only going to learn so much by standing on the sidelines/playing gadget plays

I'm happy to see him sit and hold the clipboard for a while. Like Brady and Rodgers

@canefan it's going to be interesting to watch - Jimmy G will be a on a fairly short leash but starting Jimmy G then moving to Lance if needed is much cleaner than starting Lance and then having to bench him if he struggles.

Not good for either man. If Lance is the future you can afford to let him develop carefully with Jimmy in the driver's seat

Bit of a tough outing against the saints for Lawrence.

Only preseason but Wilson looking the pick of the QBs so far. I think Lawrence might be the only one to have played against first teamers though since the Packers held back their starters vs the jets.

Looking like day one starts for Lawrence and Wilson with the other three backing up (although Mac Jones might get past Newton with a really strong week three performance).

Can't wait for the regular season to see how this QB class goes.

I see Josh Rosen has been cut by the 49ers, which shows how fast you can go from stud to nobody.

@cyclops i saw the highlights of Lawrence is week one. completed a couple of nice throws, but his arm seemed to lack zip. Don't reckon he ends up being much

    and signed by the Falcons.

He has been on a lot of teams already (Cardinals, Dolphins, Bucs, 49ers and now Falcons and I might even be missing some).

Looking forward to Cowboys @ TB on opening night Thursday night football. Except it looks like Sky aren't showing it so I can't take the piss at work on Friday while watching it.

@shark surely that can't be right.

I was weighing up Spark vs Sky for NFL - not sure who has it, but Spark has much better delayed starts and fast forwards

Why not have both? Cunning that they don't screen the same games

I think Spark has multiple games and Sky has maybe a feature game, replays, highlights and the ESPN shows

NFL game pass is $110ish. Too pricey for me when I don't get to watch any of the Sunday afternoon games (and rarely full night games) but if you're able to watch all the Sunday games probably worth it.

@cyclops somewhat tempting. I like watching Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and Friday afternoon NFL, it's very family friendly.

Being able to choose games is good too.

May pick it up this year. I do like the NCAA FBS though, it's fun to watch. Needs ESPN, which bundles with sky
