120/4 chasing 155 with 8.9 overs to go. Not so much.

Most decent cricket coverage usually converts it into '35 off 53 deliveries' in ODI's and T20's. Can't recall the specifics, but rule of thumb seems to be to shift from overs to deliveries when there's fewer than 100 deliveries left for ODI's, and probably all innings in the T20's.

Yeah, but style of the Hundred is that those basic stats are on the screen the entire time, with the key ones in the biggest fonts.

It's basically just 20/20 style cricket to me, which is enjoyable but not the real thing. But as I said, my son absolutely loved it and knew what was going on the whole time.

The glory of test cricket is waking up and having no idea how days will go. Well done England, going to a decider by teh look (barring a superhuman batting effort).

Mind you, India got rolled for 40-something in Aus, and then went on to win the series. Mental scars don't seem to exist these days

I follow Wisden on FB for better or worse ( their fapping over English players is pretty tough to read ) but shit James Anderson has had a bloody impressive career. 19 years of test cricket is exceptional and he’s genuinely getting better and better as opposed to fading away.

Unless we’re playing Australia in Australia

In Test 1, though, we were bloody good for a long time. They were just slightly better - and got the luck. A few of the edges that Smith popped up off Wagner go to hand on another day. After that, we got cooked, and didn't recover.

The mental failures were more in the coaches than the players at the start. Debuting Ferguson was crazy after not giving him a run in Hamilton a few weeks before. But then we did fall in a heap... so scarring or mental collapse unfortunately.

The whole tour was a blot on the copybook, but we’re world champs so fuck it. I can live with a team not being perfect.

i remember when James Anderson was average, and only seemed to take wickets against us

And then he got a lot, lot better. If you were teaching kids to be a swing bowler, his action, seam position, and ball release are pretty much all you need.

The improvement is almost Hadlee like ( I mean Anderson is very good but Hadlee is an all time legend )

I would have to put Anderson in the All time legend status too now.

600+ wickets yes. Average of 26.5 is pretty high. His record isn't that much different to Tim Southee's, he's just played twice the number of tests

Compared to the real modern-day ATG of his era, his average is like 5 runs higher.

I would still have him as the best England player i can really remember.

It would be interesting to see a comparison for the most test wickets once a player reached 30. Anderson would be right up there I think, as he has had a very long career (albeit with some injuries).

I think sub 25 puts you in the ATG category ( this is not always an exact measure of course ) but Anderson did play a lot when batting averages were higher than previous eras.

I wouldn’t rate Anderson as high as a guy like Dale Steyn….comparisons to Southee and Boult are pretty fair though.

In terms of performance Paddles would be one of the absolute best. Bear in mind he was 34 when he took 15 in the match vs Oz !!!!!

Indeed, I think Hadlee damaged his stats ( shit, if you can say that about a bloke who averaged 22 per test wicket ) early on in his career by being a bit loose and inaccurate.

Once he shortened the run up he became THE absolute ATG of the 80s, pretty incredible when you think how many fast bowlers break down at that age.

Anderson has played more tests in his 30s than nearly any NZer will play in their entire career

Also, my all time attack of Paddles, McGrath and my boy Curtly are all gonna play in that team until their retirement. Look at their fucking records!
