Ha, a neat example of the sometimes counterintuitive intricacies of the NFL in today's Jets-Eagles preseason game. The eagles threw away a winning position by scoring.

The jets were trailing by 1 with no time outs and just over a minute to go; they were trying to run the 2 minute drill to set up a field goal. The eagles make a nice defensive stop with an interception and the defender takes it to the house. The jets then get the ball back from the kick off with about 50 seconds left and manage to throw a hail mary to set up the 2 point conversion attempt to tie the game... which they make. No OT in preseason so finishes a tie.

If the eagles defender had just stepped out of bounds after making the pick, the offence comes onto the field takes a couple of knees, game over. Although the eagles probably should have gone for 2 after they scored.

None of this has any relevance to the regular season (except that maybe Eagles head coach Sirianni might be a bit conservative in his game management, but even then he might have been wanting to get his kicker as much game time practice as possible), but just the kind of 4d chess that makes me love the NFL.

Jesus the Texans are a dumpster fire. They trade a starting LB and a 7th for Shaq Lawson plus a 6th. They restructure his deal to make 7m salary a signing bonus, then trade him for a 6th to the Jets.

This means that they Jets have a low tier starting edge for under $1m this year and an non guaranteed 9m next year. And the Texans have a 6th round pick. And best of all; the 6th round pick is actually the 49ers (from another trade) so it's looking likely to be a mid to late round 6th rounder.

In summary; the Texans will pay 7m against the cap for someone who never saw a regular season start for them. Can a team get negative wins?

@cyclops Texans must be short odds to have the number 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Today the 49ers rotated Jimmy G and Lance coming in and out on the same drive and it worked well (against backups). Will be interesting to see what they do in the regular season.

As much as I love most things Texas, I couldn't give a flying fuck about the Texans. And I can't stand the Astros. Maybe it's more of a Houston thing (cool tunnel network but otherwise boring AF).

I think he'll get a job elsewhere, but he appears to be a shadow of his former self. And Belicheck likes an accurate pocket passer, which is what Jones appears to be capable of

Lots of these guys are choosing not to. Pretty selfish as if they fail the protocols and the team default a game all of the players lose their pay

But don't say it. Urban Meyer now under investigation by the NFLPA for saying that vaccination status was considered when cutting down to 53.

Reasonably quiet cutdown day overall. Not that it's ever that exciting.

Cracking game this mroning/afternoon between Virginia Tech and NC. Went right to the wire, underdog got up, and the crowd was insane.

Not long to NFL kickoff, and a monster matchup tomorrow with Georgia Clemson (along with a heap of quality other games)

NFL's high vax rate 'unique' model for nation

NFL's high vax rate 'unique' model for nation

Although NFL medical officer Allen Sills acknowledged that "COVID zero" is not an attainable goal, he told ESPN's Kevin Seifert the league's high COVID-19 vaccination rates could model a way out for the country.

The NFL's high COVID-19 vaccination rate provides a "unique opportunity" to model a way out of the ongoing pandemic for the entire country, NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said Wednesday in an interview with ESPN.

"We know we are going to have positive cases this season," Sills said a day before the league is scheduled to open its 2021 regular season. "I don't think 'COVID zero' is an attainable goal, and we all need to understand that. What we think we can do is keep our team environments as safe as possible, avoid widespread outbreaks and, with vaccinations in place, convert this into a seasonal illness as opposed to a devastating pandemic."

Well, just finished opening day game on replay. Cracking game. Both Dak and Tom looked bloody good, Cowboys should have won - but just couldn't get the stops when they mattered - and poor kicking cost them.

    Still, we're back baby

Seriously, what this guy has done is so impressive.

Didn't watch the Eagles this morning, but apparently he played well...and he even killed a man.

Stafford already showing his class. Huge throw for a Rams TD.

This whole Stafford situation is fascinating.

A former number 1 overall pick with elite physical skills who isn't a bust but has just been stuck in a garbage franchise his entire career.

Now he's paired with an elite offensive head coach and a 'win now' roster. Whilst he has a lot of 'tread on the tyres' he's not old for a QB (only 33). It's put up or shut up time for Stafford in the next few seasons. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Stafford ends up in the Hall of Fame if he really crushes these next few years.

On the other side of things Dalton is dead man walking - just a matter of time until Justin Fields takes over.

@kiwimurph I'm not surprised by Stafford. Clearly an excellent QB stuck on a shit team as you say. At least he got out before they totally ruined him or he voluntarily retired like Sanders and Megatron
