Nope actual containers know as "caches". Then inside them is a log book and often random little items that you can swap or add to. Some also contain items called "trackables" which you need to log if you take them and then place them in another cache - these could be random little figures with tag's on the as ID or geocoins which is as you would expect a coin.

The cynic in me wonders if some bored young fuckwits have deliberately ruined it ( ie moved or taken it ) for those of us around Wellys south coast, has that happened to you guys ?

Yeah. The term they use is "muggled'. Happens a fair bit but you can check the activity on the app and see when that cache was last found. Usually some good hints on there too if you are really stuck.

It's amazing some of the places you find them and places you walk past all the time have caches hidden. We're all just unaware.

I use the iphone one just called 'Geocaching'. The free membership is pretty good. Allows you to find any with 1.5 difficulty and 1.5 terrain rating or loss.

Premium one just upgrades you to access all caches, ie those higher rated plus also those people have set up as premium members only.

Some useful links

Watch and learn --> https://www.geocaching.com/guide/

NZ supplies. Not a lot but some stuff. --> http://www.cacheme.co.nz/

Works well if you like fitness and the outdoors as you can go on some pretty awesome missions and caches are usually placed in places people think you should go to see the view or something else special. You will go and find a lot of places you didnt know about before.

Just read some of the logs ( didn't know you could do that ). Hopefully I can persuade the boys to come out again cos the two were found 3 and 5 days ago respectively !

You can view the caches and logs etc on the NZ supplies on https://www.geocaching.com too. Much easier to view maps on there if planning an outing

Ughh got a note back this morning saying that cant publish my cache as someone had already submit one for review in that area!

Now have custom camo'd cache perfect for the location that will need to go somewhere else. Also have an angry 8 year old daughter!

Well during school drop offs I mentioned that maybe we need to look a bit harder next time. "Treats" were suggested as a reward for lots of caches as well.

Already thought of a few options, just not as good as the initial location. Its magnetic and painted up in primer camo so will fit in well at many a lcoation.

Again the fern learns me about something I never knew existed

Are you guys able to post some pics of locations or caches, particularly locations from a bit of a distance as perspective?

If you don't want to, that's cool too :)

By the way is it pronounced Geo "cashing"

The above is a camo mint tin with magnets. Good to stick on bridges or under seats etc. Classes as small. Also there is a magnetic nano which believe it or not has a log book inside. Finger added for indication how small the micro is

Ughh came out sideways. Hard to post pic from phone.

First few we got lucky, the cach was hidden in a hole in a tree in one case which made things easy but searching for something that size is gonna be taxing even if you actually have Andre the Giant hands in real life.

Hid 3 caches over the last few days which have all been published now and logged with 'first to finds' very quickly after going live.

Also did a few caches over the weekend - about 10 in total.

Is the upgrade worth it ? I haven't needed to so far, still quite a few in the vicinity to keep us occupied.
