@kiwimurph Rico Gear is a good Gisborne lad! Hurricanes country. Was he connected with the Blues?

Crucial part of the 2003 side.

He was all over the show, so I'm sure that the Hurricanes had a chance if they had thought to ask. Google tells me he played for:

      1999: Blues
      2000: Landers
      2001: Saders
      2002 - 2004: Blues
      2005 - 2007: Saders

And during that time Auckland, BOP, Canterbury, North Harbour, Ta$man, and Nelson Bays (before it got eaten up).

      Then he pissed off overseas.

Don't rate Bower or Bridge much. But happy with the rest of the team.

To go against the grain, there is nothing wrong with George Bridge - relative strengths are decision making, accuracy and work rate. Certainly doesn’t have Reiko’s speed or Caleb’s tackle breaking capability but very useful. A team is always about a mix of skills and combinations, and his performances at test level have been good. Comparing the Crusaders and Blues backlines over the years, generally they have not had the explosive talent but have always got the results. Having a useful forward pack helps.

I think part of the bias against him , in game style he goes against the usual style of 11 we normally select ,

Inga and Jonah started something I think we now warm to .

we loved Ben Smith, who had hte decision making, accuracy and work rate. Bridge sometimes has some of that. Honestly, I urge you to go back and watch the Ireland QF, and watch him run in space s traight into defenders. It is mesmerising.

I don't think Bridge would be loved at 14 either. He's a slower, less gangly Zac Guildford

Ben Smith invariably made metres in the tackle if he did not slip right through and I haven't seen that from Bridge yet.

Let’s just wait and see. Remember what happened on here after the last game we played in Perth where there was the long awaited selection of a Barrett at 15 along with Ioane at 11, a fullback style 14 and another Barrett at lock.

The AB selection (and TSF) meltdown really accelerated after that game.

There is s disturbing lack of opprobrium for Foster's directorial ability. I've read some people liking the team ...

TBF it's not his selection policies that have attracted the most criticism. God knows Henry made some howlers.

I'll agree it's not attracted the most... but he had copped plenty

There's still seats available but I'd guesstimate >90% have been sold already. https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/event/25005ABAD83121F2

lets be honest, NZ is in a no win situation in this test.

We win, and everyone laments how shit Aus were and we shoulda won by more.

We lose and Fozzie is shit and cant believe they re-appointed him.

For me, its the tests v Arg, but more SA that I'm interested in, just like other teams like to measure themselves against us, I think we always like to measure ourselves against SA, and thier legend has certainly grown since winning the RWC and thier absence last year.

I'd like us to win in a 32-25 type match as we build toward Aregntina and SA

I'm looking forward to this game because it feels like NZ are now stopping faffing around with dual playmaker BS and just picking the best players for each position again. Mainly.

Loving to see Havilli as a true Second Five, rather than a bosh merchant though if we adds that too he's... Nonu v2? But he looks a natural there.

Think the 6-7-8 balance looks excellent, not convinced by Ardie Savea as a starter and never have been. Prefer both Paps and Cane at seven, give Jacobson a run at eight

And if I ever see Jordie on the wing again I might have to support England. Yes, AB selection was getting that bad.

@taniwharugby I haven’t really gotten over the English overpowering us at the World Cup. Prior to that we had a few escapes vs Boks where we struggled with their power game. Since then I don’t know that we have progressed. To some extent you have to match the power in the forwards at set piece but then get our running game going. I think Damien Mckenzie was their big idea but he lacks the consistency to be relied upon, as that creative player. That said we are still at our best when the backs are instinctive but with better decision making and execution than recently. No stability lately is an issue and we don’t have the experience and class that the Carter, Nonu and Smith combination had. And, as always, it starts with the forwards, and again only Whitelock ( who is not there ) and maybe Taylor are tried and true. We are definitely rebuilding so the opportunity is their for so many to step up - just hard to get a feel for whether this team has something special in them. If Akira doesn’t fire against Bok’s, that would be a bummer. Looking forward to that game.
