The idea we won't keep cooperating with Australia is daft in my opinion.

We need them and they need us. All this posturing from Australia is unhelpful, but we can't just ditch them.

For a long time, Australia had replaced SA as our primary foes. We cannot forget that just because Australia are going through a downswing.

Just playing NPC would be dull, and most casual fans wouldn't be interested. You can't just ignore the casual fans.

Do we though? I agree that cooperation is best for both parties, at least from a content standpoint. But I don't think we need them.

i think the NPC would always tick along...but it would never make enough money on its own to compete with what the players could get overseas so we would see more and more drift away

a TT or pacific comp probably earns enough to at least keep a core of the top players in the region

I just wonder how long we stay in an abusive relationship where it's not clear the other party is actually bringing anything positive to it.

Regularly getting flogged has seen it turn very nasty and of the fans that haven't walked away from the game, a growing number are fucking delusional.

Perhaps if they tried to fix their domestic game they might become more competitive in the tests?

for their own good, do we actually need to take the NRL/NBL approach...and just invited aussie teams to join a new "domestic" comp, a couple fo breakaway teams and RA would probably fall into line with re focusing on a domestic comp

They are too proud for that. Look how they rail about the idea of fewer aussie teams in a combined comp

@canefan probably true but i wonder if that was more RA than say the Red/tahs or brumbies, team with actual history that might see themselves as being dragged down by the newer ones

@kiwiwomble Wasn't that exactly how NZR's initial proposal for SR (5 NZ teams and 2 or 3 Aussie teams) was perceived by the Aussies, last year and led to their (over)reaction via the media?

That's why I am firmly of the belief that Japan is the answer. Perfect symbiotic relationship. We have the players, they have the cash. Even the most perfect relationship with Aus won't solve the player drain problem.

@stargazer well may have been, as i say i wasn't sure if that was RA talking on behalf of the teams as they hold their licences or something or if the actual teams were all in agreement, i mean the reds might have to break away and call themselves the Maroons or something

me too, i think the current NPC teams, aussie super teams and the japanese teams wold probably cover a good continuous spectrum of quality

@taniwharugby definitely would have to be a full restructure, maybe with a premiership and championship and probably only the NPC premiership teams (seven)
