A timely reminder why 1991 was the best year of rock, possibly ever ( although 1970 was also incredible with Zep, Purple and Sabbath all dropping amazing albums )

Sounds like the bias of nostalgia. 1991 was a year when pop / MOR / AOR ruled. Pearl Jam and Metallica were definite outliers IIRC. I’m not sure how old you were that year but I remember the early 90s as being disappointing and flat, apart from PJ, Metallica, Pixies and a couple of others. 91 was all fluffybunnies like Michael Bolton and T’Pau. And U2 dropped Achtung Baby and we knew then they were done.

1970 was a good year but Led Zeppelin released their least loved album that year. The year before they dropped two all-time classics. 1971 has a better claim, but 1973 was the year to beat I think, probably followed by 1975.

These were all released within a couple of months of eachother in 91. Just saying. In most cases their best albums too ( can’t beat Appetite for Destruction though, also Superunknown is possibly Soundgardens best effort )

@mn5 that ranking list is appalling. Bad apples is way too low just to start.

Agree with you on knockin but do enjoy live snd let die.

Yeah I dunno. Gunners have done all sorts of awesome stuff but covers is certainly not their forte I don’t reckon.

Further to my last post….hard rock bands that didn’t release something in 1991 but nonetheless had albums in reasonable proximity had names like AC/DC, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Faith no More, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Collective Soul, Primus, Iron Maiden, Rage against the Machine, Living Colour, Janes Addiction, Candlebox and Megadeth.

That era fucken rocked ( pun intended )

@mn5 If you’re saying that it was a great year for hard rock I’m more inclined to agree with you. My definition of rock is probably a bit wider than yours by the sound of things.

    Pick a year between 1969 and 1976.

Fair call and I’ve had this discussion at length with lots of bogan mates. I mean there’s no way that era competes with more ‘pop’ type stuff of the 80s for example.

Then again 90-91 had bangers from MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice ( anyone who says they don’t like their respective biggest hits is a liar ) and Prince and Madonna both released awesome music then too

I am watching a crappy serial killer movie where the killer drives a molester van, and all I can think of is the very mediocre Fu Manchu track Boogie Van.

Listen to their track from the same album, King of the Road, instead.

I fucking love Fu Manchu - if Dazed and Confused was set in the 90s then they would've provided the soundtrack - but I, and reasonable person, would expect them to be abject retards. Turns out that they're chill dudes with diverse and surprisingly good taste in music.

In 2010 I went to a party for the record label Blackest Ever Black, and thought I was cool. A decade later I accepted that I am just old.

I think that this track was about my last gasp of being "hip" and up with quality new music. A friend of a friend was the engineer!

I barely know anything new, even in my very narrowly defined genre interests.

These guys were like the last gasp of gen x not absolutely fucking sucking. They even look old as shit.

@tim i fucking appreciate you bro

I love Fu Manchu. King of the Road is an awesome track. There are a couple of other absolute bangers on that album too. I love that they are what they are, and they just don't give a fuck. Album after album of fuzzy stoner rock

You put me on to Red Fang, and i fucking love them. Wires is great, but Prehistoric Dog is amazing. Plus another amazing video

    I heart you Tim

Tim Finn and Phil Manzanera have collaborated during lockdown and put out an album together - Caught By The Heart.

Very jazzy. Manzanera says it takes him back to his childhood days in Cuba. Continues Finns interesting partnerships of the last few years. Finn writes lyics and sings in Spanish despite not knowing the language. Even has Tim's daughter doing skat

Unfortunately only the title track is available on You Tuba nd it's pretty meh so given it's 50 years in 2022 since Roxy Musics debut

New album is bloody good if you want something more eclectic than the usual mainstream pap though

So Isle of Wight festival was on over the weekend and they televised a lot of it. I caught some highlights in the evening and watched a couple of sets as well. Here is the Major Rage review of what I saw.

    1. Snow Patrol - full set. Really good best of hits set. Some great sing alongs and they do have quite the back catalogue. Was really impressed on the whole
    2. The Script - full set. Who the hell are these guys? I'd not heard of them at all. Front man is an ex boy-band so knows how to sing and put on a show. Songs are very very anthemic, if nothing new or exciting. Doubt will ever win any awards, but decent sort of watching and no doubt a great crowd to be a part of if they know the songs
    3. Duran Duran - erm, shithouse. I saw them 10 years ago and they were fucking great. Le Bon is just old now and unfortunately, can't really sing! Think he was having mega issues as was adjusting his ear piece a lot. Band was great, but Simon is just an old guy in tight pants now.
    4. Sophie Ellis Bextor - I've always thought she's seriously fucking hot so watched her for this. I wasn't disappointed, although she's hot in a mum sort of way these days. Really only has one song, so sung mainly covers plus that. Good eye candy for a middle aged bloke.
    5. David Guetta - I'm not really a raver, have had my time with that and do it enjoy it every now and again. But if I could pick one set to be at, it was his. Starts off with Titanium and all sorts of mixes and had an incredible light show. Crowd went nuts, it looked totally awesome.
    6. Maysie Peters - UK's answer to Bic Runga ... very talented young girl.
    7. Supergrass - Not listened to them in ages, and man I'd forgotten about how good they are! @MN5 I think you'd really enjoy them as the baselines behind the tracks are all over the show. Put on a great set, had the sundowner slot and I really enjoyed them. Drummer is like animal from sesame street. Man they can play fast.
    8. Sam Fender - not heard of this bloke, was ok, nothing new or interesting in my view
    9. Becky Hill - bit of Amy Winehouse / Joss Stone about her and I quite liked her set. Again, nothing revolutionary but enjoyed it.

So yeah, not there, but probably watched 4-5 hours of it.

(before people ask, yes things are open and I should be out 'n about on Fri/Sat evenings in the indian summer we are having here in September, but marathon in two weeks make Major Rage a very boring person)

Disappointed in Duran Duran but unfortunately bands aren’t sports stars….they don’t have selectors to drop them when maybe they should.

I hear ya re Supergrass, saw them live about 20 years ago and they were awesome, glad they’re still around !

fucking looove Sophie Ellis Bextor. Went out with a chick for a while for no other reason than she looked like her. Saw her the other day, she no longer does.

I saw Duran Duran when the bizarrely turned up on the bill of the V Festival some 14 years ago? (i went mainly for the Pumpkins and QoTSA) and they were okay then. Father Time is undefeated.
