<p>That sounds better dogmeat. I absolutely love proper beer or real ale as people seem to like calling it. It's been a great disappointment to me over the years to see all the regional brewers in the UK fall by the wayside and the ones that come along after them get swallowed up by the urinatory brewers such as Coors as soon as they get any degree of success. The poxy craft beer lot are now taking the moral high ground spouting all this bollocks about being hand made (whatever that is in brewing terms) and having new and exciting flavours. What's wrong with beer tasting of beer? If I want something that tastes of pears and honey, I'll eat some pears and honey.</p>

I looked for gluten all the way down the glass and couldn't find any even after emptying it. Do I need to check another one? -
<p>Sister-in-law is a coeliac and has to be wary of gluten and she's fine with this. However Mrs Cato, in sympathy, bears a strong bond to the weird-beard above <sigh>.</p>

I have sympathy with you Cato. The Mrs went through this stage too (on a freakin doctors advice) but seems to have worked out it is simply too much wheat that disagrees not gluten. If you are actually coeliac then that's real bad shit. Thinking gluten free is some kind of healthy eating is up there with anti vaccing. <br>
Off to have my kombucha and fermented cabbage juice now....... -

<p>Nah, I hadn't drunk the last batch quick enough so still have some of my 2nd brew in bottles and had a bit over 4L left in the barrell so after sterlising them, I used 2 1.5L plastic water bottles.</p>

<p>They had plenty of fizz when I opened them, but for some reason the sediment in these 2 bottles as soon as I tilted the bottle to pour them got upset and the bottle frothed over. The 2nd bottle I was much more careful, and it didn't fizz over, but the sediment still got upset. Hasn't been an issue in any of the 333ml, 500ml or 750ml bottles, so not quite sure qhat the issue is, possibly the bottom of the plastic bottle???</p> -

<p>How much primer did you put in? Could just be a bit too much or, as it was the last of the batch you would have probably put a bit more sediment in and it was still a bit active.</p> -
<p>I have other bottles form the same batch which is perfectly fine,so yeah, I think it is more likely getting the stuff form the bottom of the barrell as I knew I was using plastic bottles I left them for the last, alothough I did have 1 small bottle form the very last that was ok, but maybe just lucky! </p>

<p>I finally tried Orange Panhead and the first dip into it was awful and I regretted my purchase. But by the time I got to the end of the bottle, I was quite enjoying it. To be fair, I haven't found an APA that I have liked but that was one I didn't mind.</p>

<p>Still prefer the Blue one but I think Iyou be hard pressed to find an APA that I would enjoy.</p>

<p>Hooroo, I think you will find that it isn't APAs that you don't like just strong hop flavours as opposed to hop bittering.</p>

<p>Anything going for use of hop flavours will go heavy on them to bring them forward and that seems to be what doesn't agree with your palate irrespective of what hop is used (whether the citrusy US hops styles or the fruity/grassy NZ ones).</p>
<p>Stick with the more traditional bittering (Saaz type) hops and you won't go wrong or feel like you have wasted $.</p>
<p>That way you can settle on good malt flavour with the right balance of bittering for thirst quenching.</p> -

<p>No offence taken though, I love a good APA or IPA but totally get that some people find them a bit much. As a thirst quencher on a stinking hot day they aren't the best but in the temperate weather we're having at the moment I find they're perfect. Without sounding like a complete cock I think the kiwi palate on the whole still likes it's beer with far less of an "attack" of taste if that makes sense.</p>

<p>During the Summer of 07/08 I drunk nothing but Steinlager Pure, it's still a drop that isn't without it's merits but I definitely prefer my brews to be a bit more flavoursome nowadays.</p>
