When I say that I’m referring to the amount of good bands at one time. Zep are still the greatest band ever.

So other bands of the same era as LedZep are outgunned by 90s bands?

Sabbath, Humble Pie, Deep purple, Who, Aerosmith, ACDC...

Humble Pie aren’t in that league. At all. I hate Aerosmith so they’ll never feature. AC/DC of course can make a claim for the 90s too given they released a bit then.

I love Sabbath and Purple and I like the Who.

But the early 90s had Gunners, Faith no More, Chillis, Metallica, Rage, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden. All in all a far better era overall in my opinion.

Wash your mouth out. Humble Pie are all sorts of awesome (if under-rated). Give them another listen if you haven't for a while.

Marriott is right up there as one of the best ever rock vocalists and their influence on bands down the track (even to the point of copying Marriotts moves) is huge.

I never said they were bad and yeah, he was a great vocalist.

The big three were always Zep, Sabbath and Purple though and of them Zep were by far the biggest.

Marriott was Page's first choice when he was forming Zep.
Rumour is that the fucktard that was Sharon Osbournes father and Marriott's manager (more like owner) asked Page if he was able to play guitar with ten broken fingers.

@mn5 All that shows (to me) is that we have a natural inclination to revere the bands we listened to growing up (and first getting laid to).

You're definitely not talking bands as you're focusing on the genre that you like the most. Bands means anything bigger than a duo so on that basis the 70's had everything from Sweet to Sex Pistols, Stones to Supertramp and Santana to Styx.

90's had Ace of Base, Hanson, Limp Biskit, Nickleback, Creed etc. I like music from both era's. I loathe music from both era's. I don't consider one better than the other - just as I wouldn't try and compare the 20's with the 50's.

I do despair of much music of the last 20 years. There are some gems but in the main it is boring, soulless, unoriginal pap.

Marriot was good but Plant was amazing. Right decision was made.

Don Arden sounds like an absolute arsehole ( I just read a book on Black Sabbath recently ) but I guess you have to have that personality to push bands to where they can go ? Same for Zeps Manager Peter Grant who pushed them to an even higher stratosphere.

I’d like to think in both cases it was purely down to the revolutionary talent both bands possessed in abundance but they wouldn’t have gone far without some ruthless fluffybunnies holding the puppet strings.

    @pakman WT actual Fuck?

It was the Canon in D I originally posted.

And I was the only respondent, commenting that it was sublime.

I love that piece, and given your comment about no one noticing and just putting up rock, I couldn’t resist posting a rock version of Canon in D.

Dude can certainly play those notes?!

Indeed. I would generally say I like music from all era's but I genuinely can't think of anything new which has come out in the last 10-15 years which has really caught my ears. If you look at best music of the 2010's you generally find it's almost all Pop / Dance stuff. There are some diamonds in there, but few and far between.

Was goofing around on youtube the other day and recommended for me was some old live Pantera stuff. Man Dimebag could play quick. No idea about his technical proficiency but he was undoubtedly a seriously talented guitarist.

This is the video that came up as recommended

Dimebag deserves as mention. Had an awesome presence and attitude about him.

Probably a better guitarist than Kirk Hammett.

Really fucked up what happened to him too. Apparently people thought it was a hoax at first ? RIP.

Never heard of him til now.

Sounds like total guitar wank to me. Up there with Yngwie Malmsteen. You’ve gotta have soul and emotion, not just chops.
