Regards Baldwin, was he pointing it at her, in one of his legendary tantrums, aiming towards the camera, or just a clumsy accident?

From what I read, they were rehearsing a scene, it accidentally discharged

does anyone know why they would have even had real rounds on set? and they keep saying it was a prop gun...but if a prop gun can fire a normal round doesn't that just make it a normal gun?

For sequences that require real rounds? The issue isn't that there are live rounds, it's that they've been managed in a way that has permitted them to be mistaken. Like range management 101; never mix ammunition.

Movie sets will by their nature be a compromised departure from good weapon handling.

What strikes me as fucking odd is this snjippet from the article:

The gun that was fired was one of three laid on a cart by the film‘s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.

What were the other two for? How did the deputy director know which one to grab?

@antipodean ok, what kind of scene can only be shot using real rounds? applying the first rule of HSE (elimination) im honestly surprised thats a thing, that scenes cant be filmed using some sort of CGI/special effects etc

Realistic automatic gunfire for one. Weapon effects for another. CGI looks obviously fake.

Think about how many films use guns, this is a sure rare occurrence as you can tell from the coverage. A bit coming out about the 24 year old "master of arms" responsible for the gun on set, who got the job via her dad. Previously has given live guns to kids.

i did some googling as was so surprised, seems there are industry guidelines about not bringing live ammunition on set

Prop guns spark debate after cinematographer's death on set

Prop guns spark debate after cinematographer's death on set

An on-set shooting death has reignited concern about the use of prop guns like the weapon actor Alec Baldwin discharged in the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming a movie in New Mexico.

    directs to this

    https://www.csatf.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/01FIREARMS.pdf
"BLANKS CAN KILL. TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS THOUGH THEY ARE LOADED.
"LIVE AMMUNITION" IS NEVER TO BE USED NOR BROUGHT ONTO ANY STUDIO
    LOT OR STAGE."

    and from

Guns, Ammo, Accountability: Hollywood Munitions Experts Grapple With ‘Rust’ Tragedy

Guns, Ammo, Accountability: Hollywood Munitions Experts Grapple With ‘Rust’ Tragedy

Questions swirl about on-set gun safety and who could be at fault after Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun loaded with live rounds, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Firearms safety guidelines are clear and longstanding in Hollywood, where guns have been employed on the big screen since the silent film era: Live ammunition is never to be used nor brought onto any studio lot or stage. Blanks can kill. Treat all firearms as though they are loaded.

    obviously just guidelines 🤷🏻♂

That's been my query. How in the hell can they have a prop that is a real gun?

@booboo that language has added to the confusion. Real or fake they apparently call any weapon a prop gun. I'd read that the person looking after the guns had gone shooting with live rounds earlier in the day (as they had some cool guns on set) then things went really wrong after that.
I'm not sure if that has been substantiated, but there were reports of earlier fuck ups with guns, and people walking off set. Sounds like a nightmare with all the union and scab workers coming/going and some inexperienced people working in critical roles. Not to mention the guy that handed Baldwin the gun and called out that it was all good to go.

@paekakboyz yeah, i just read that too

that they use to take the guns for target practice, nothing to do with filming, just for fun

Part and parcel of living in a society that sees guns as 'normal'.
    Just increases the risk levels.

I know it is probably cheaper and easier but why don't they actually use 'props'? Model replicas that can't fire bullets?
