Army of Thieves
Prequel to Army of the Dead. Actually wifey and I thought it was much better than Army of the Dead, but led nicely into it, even to the point of us doing a doubleheader and watching the orginal again. Zach Synder still has his hands all over this movie, but in my mind much better length and fun to watch. Story focuses on the locksmith and his background which turns out to be a pretty good action/heist movie and how he gets into safe cracking
3.5 unbreakable safes out of 5 hans wagners

Eek, I was actually thinking about watching this as he wasn't directing. Zac Snyder is so weird, every interview I've seen him do, press etc, he's always a really nice guy and really interesting, if he had a podcast I'd subscribe to it, yet I can't stand his movies bar one (300, and I'm too scared to rewatch it again in case I've got a false memory).

put it this way, he wrote it and Deborah Snyder and himself are producers, but is was directed by Matthias Schweighöfer (the lead actor) .. so dont flip out yet

Yeah, I listened to an interview with the director and Zac on the Empire podcast. From the podcast it didn't seem like Zac had his hands all over it. Hmmm.
I'm trying to find something to watch today as Monday is my go to the cinema day, there's nothing I want to see (too many horrors out due to Halloween), and I have a conundrum. I have access to a 4K copy of Dune, but I want to see Dune in the cinema, but there's nothing I really want to watch today and am afraid I'll cave and watch Dune.

So watched the latest in the Marvel Universe yesterday.
The eternals
Probably the most average movie from them for a while. Drawn out and appeared to have spent more time on ensuring diversity rather than fixing the story itself. Even some cool CGI scenes could not help get them over the line here. Wont be one I will re-watch anytime soon. Gemma Chan is hawt though. A quick scan of IMDB and metacritic suggests I am not alone with Fantastic 4 equivalent ratings lol
2 deviants out of 5 boyband wannabe actors

I'm going to see this tomorrow, want to see where I sit with it (I struggle to believe a film can be worse than Thor 2) as it appears to be a real Marmite movie.

So I watched this and quite enjoyed it, helped by the fact it's not directed by Zac and didn't feel too Snyder-ish, the chick is hot (as was the French interpol chick), and the lead dude was pretty funny. Almost tempted to watch Army of the Dead now, almost.
You could tell it was filmed during Covid, some pretty quiet streets. Was weird how they sometimes spoke Euro languages and then other times they'd just speak english.

If you're a Snyder fan then I can't take your word for it. However, if it took you 11 sittings to watch Justice League then I'll believe you.

I honestly wouldn't know if I'm a Snyder fan, I never know who directs stuff I watch

@nepia I was the same except I did give Army of The Dead a go. It was Ok and as @Kiwiwomble said it's more than just a zombie movie, but it got a bit boring and predictable for me. I found myself FFWD the last quarter and the set up for a sequel was telegraphed a long way out.

I never finished it, probably never will.
Bautista always surprises me with what a good actor he is though, I mean he’s De Niro/Day Lewis/Oldman level compared to any other pro wrestler obviously but compared to “normal” actors he’s very good as well.
Can’t wait to see him in Dune

I watched Boss Level last night. A fun movie.
Frank Grillo is awesome - he should be the top action star today. Looking forward to Copshop

@bayimports I liked The Eternals. Helped that I had no idea of the story at all so was following it as it went. I thought it dragged a bit early on but I thought the CGI fight scenes were better than the average CGI fight scenes in MCU/DCEU movies.
Confirmation it's a marmite movie, four of us went to see it and we split 50/50.

CGI was very good, but I found the movie struggled to keep my attention, it took too long to make its point and not enough either action/comedy/tension to keep you interested along the way....look not the worst i have seen, by any stretch but given they generally set the bar pretty high movie -wise, it was step down and at a high risk of getting banned stepping more into DC level territory, (not all DC
), but using WW84 as a reference to a similar length movie that I fel also missed the mark.
..........................................SPOILER BELOW..................................
and dont get me started after the credits with the drunk goblin/dwarf was ..how should i say it... a fantasy character, who was there to relieve Harry Styles lol
-
@bayimports I thought it was much better than WW84, that was disappointing due to the relevant quality of first one and having Gal Gadot.
I'm not a DC fan (in case you somehow missed that
) and didn't feel it was stepping into their territory too much.
As I said in my OP I think it lagged a bit in parts so agree it took a bit long to get going.
Even though I enjpoyed it, I don't think it's top tier Marvel, but I like it better than Thor 1&2, Hulk and Iron Man 2 and am genuinely bemused by the smacking it's getting from critics. I listened to Mark Kermode directly after leaving the cinema and the stuff he complained about what was all the stuff I liked.
..........SPOILER BELOW..........
Agree with you on the dwarf, was he voiced by Patton Oswald, I also had no idea who Harry Styles was even though he seemed familiar.
They said Eternals will return, I wonder what kind of box office it needs to return, although I think being Marvel they can likely green light a sequel regardless of box office performance if it fits into their overall narrative. Especially if it does well on Disney+.
