Antonie Dupont richly deserves World Player of the Year. He makes things happen for France and causes problems for his opponents. Best player in both 2020 and 2021. One of the All-Time greats already and just 25 years old.

@mariner4life to be fair to Ardie, he has played bloody well, and consistently so, problem is, he throws out the balance of our loosies too much (esp at 8 ) and therefore affects quite alot of our game...but clearly we know jack shit given he won this and was supposedly the best 8 in the world this year...

@dogmeat Yeah - I thought Jordie would win.

The four nominees were about right, though. Aaron Smith would have contended if he'd played the whole season.

Just looking at the winners, I am really surprised that Ross Filipo won ahead of Neil Barnes. This coming from a Waikato supporter.

probably for his speaking out in criticizing the NZR big wigs..

@kiwi_expat I posted that article originally, and agreed with Barnes. I hope this wasn't the reason. He was the only coach nominated whose team never lost a game.

It's that time of the year when everyone seems to want to pick a all-time XV. This time it's a British rugby website called ruck.co.uk (never visited it myself). 200,000 respones they say.

    15: Serge Blanco (France)
    14: Bryan Habana (South Africa)
    13: Brian O’Driscoll
    12: Ma’a Nonu (New Zealand)
    11: Jonah Lomu (New Zealand)
    10: Dan Carter (New Zealand)
9: Joost Van Der Westhuizen (South Africa)
    8: Zinzan Brooke (New Zealand)
    7: Richie McCaw (New Zealand)
    6: Francois Pienaar (South Africa)
    5: John Eales (Australia)
    4: Martin Johnson (England)
    3: Owen Franks (New Zealand)

BOD doesn’t even need his country in brackets. What a star.

    @mariner4life Hate - No. Disagree - plenty.
I take it players have to be from the professional era? With Blanco exempted as the token white Venezuelen?

oh i disagree with heaps of it. But usually i see a public poll of this type and i laugh at every 2nd selection. At least in nearly every position i can say "oh yeah, he's in the conversation for sure"

6 players would make mine, and that is a pretty high number

That's always the thing about these polls - there is a recency bias.

Pienaar might have no.6 on his jersey but he's competing against McCaw in his position.

@mariner4life 7-12 I wouldnt argue, sure I could throw names there, but the rest, I think I could argue for better players...

Only 1 jumps out at me as someone I'd not consider at all would be Leonard, despite his longevity, wasnt a fan.

Os Du Randt won two WCs 12 years apart. I’m quite triggered on his behalf that he’s not there.
