Anyway, thank fuck for that. Looking very poor from our blokes out there for a long period, with a lack of plan evident.

I'll take it. Bring back Cider for Neser and we'll be right.

Dude, it's Adelaide, under the sun it's a road.

There's a reason it's the designated pink ball test every summer.

This series is like the old shit day's where England turn up and get flogged through 5 games

@mariner4life but it wasn't exactly hooping around under lights either.

Mostly the bowling plan seemed to be shit. Not enough challenge just outside off stump from the pace bowlers, and Lyon inconsistent if a little unlucky

Funny reading Root lament the lengths that his bowlers bowled, while most of his top order batsmen have batting averages that would embarrass a 90's NZ top order...

The bowlers are somewhere behind the batsmen, fielding, and wicketkeeping in the order of concern...

Trouble with the pink ball is that the danger period can coincide with a new cherry.
If a team can bat first on a road for 5 sessions they then get the twilight period with a new ball and the test can be as good as over in two days.
The need for very good openers is emphasised hugely.
England don't have very good openers.

          From Wisden's Facebook page:

England have fielded 25 Test cricketers in 2021.

Only two of them - Joe Root and Dawid Malan - average more than 30 with the bat this year.

There was a later one from Lyon where ball tracking dipped the trajectory to hit the stumps.
I don't know how it can accurately predict the behaviour of the ball after pitching. We often see balls surprise by keeping low or getting unusual sharp bounce. Especially with spinners that can put over/under spin on the ball.

It can't. Basically it's an 'unbiased' 3rd party system that is agreed to with the idea that, like the whole concept of DRS, it's there to help overturn the clangers.

Which is why I still don't think that the balance is right (much like the rugby TMO).

Clangers are something that was missed but obvious. Ball hitting bat on LBWs. Ball pitching outside leg. Ball missing by miles, 'catches' off the pad.
Instead we get referrals and dismissals when even the whole fielding team debate whether to refer while assessing the chance of ball tracking going in their favour.

Reduce the call time to 5 seconds.

4 out of England's top 6 batsmen average under 35.

Of the other two Root is clearly class but Stokes.....

Maybe that points to the fielding team needing to rush through their overs on the first day - bowling mainly spinners, so that they get 20+ overs with their second new ball under lights on Day 1.

If I was the Aussie coach - in a team still trying to clean up its act - I'd quietly kill the captain's nickname.

It seems like we've had way more 5th day showdowns in the last 2-3 years than we've had previously. Teams hanging on for the draw, falling just short or chasing down big 4th innings totals.

We're not great at putting teams away, but I also wonder if the pitches are better/more durable than they have been in the past. Pitches don't break down like they used to. No balls springing up off a length or staying at ankle height.

And it was the same thing last night. I don't think this pitch was a road at all - no batsman ever looked super comfortable, except for maybe an hour of Root and Malan and an hour of Smith and Carey. And yet it didn't give much at all to the bowlers on day 5.

I'll take it. Bring back Cider for Neser and we'll be right.

I had to look up why he’s called Cider. Do the team actually call him by that name?

i hope to god it's only low breed bogan fuckwits that do

the same that use the term "michelle" and cheer when a bowler holds the ball up

dead shits the lot of them

Pat Cummins' nickname is "Cider" (think about it…) You can often hear the Australian players calling him this. It's problematic for Cricket Australia, given that they lost one captain because of what someone put into his underwear, and another because of what he took out of his underwear.

An Australian sports team dishing out low brow, munter nicknames…..

I for one am shocked and appalled.

Its probably more that the current side scores at 3.25-3.5 an over rather than 3.75-4.0 an over at home that the Waugh/Ponting era teams were able to. That difference creates at least an extra session for the bowlers to do their work and makes four sessions to save a test five.

Many reasons for that, mainly a weaker batting line up and bowling attacks across the world getting much deeper. No matter how badly this tour is going for England it is hard to see them fielding an uncompetitive bowling line up even if several injuries strike and with Archer already on the sidelines.

Nicknames like that are media creations 95% of the time. Some bloke probably said it once and it took off from there. Aussie nicknames are way less witty than that. His nickname was always 'Chis' as far as I know.

Imagine calling a bloke 'covered in'. It's got one more syllable than his actual name.
