@victor-meldrew watched Gene Hackman last night engage in serious over acting in the original Poseidon Adventure. That has not aged well.

Is there a rose-coloured revisionism going on here? Wikipedia has Lee as an intelligence officer in the RAF.

Nope. Lee was in the LRDG, SOE & the SAS.

Those people just didn't want to talk about it or make a big thing about it. David Niven worked behind enemy lines after the Normandy invasion & received one of the highest US military awards that can be awarded to a non-US citizen and, like Lee, always refused to talk about his military service:

I will, however, tell you just one thing about the war, my first story and my last. I was asked by some American friends to search out the grave of their son near Bastogne.
I found it where they told me I would, but it was among 27,000 others, and I told myself that here, Niven, were 27,000 reasons why you should keep your mouth shut after the war.

From SAS and Gurkhas to Dracula and Saruman: The unique life of Sir Christopher Lee

From SAS and Gurkhas to Dracula and Saruman: The unique life of Sir Christopher Lee

Considered one of the most prolific actors in the history of films, Sir Christopher Lee was a true on-screen legend.

Yeah I heard about that, not sure how much I believe it though ? His on screen fighting wasn’t entirely convincing, he looked downright shit in some scenes.

Yeah, he wasn't the greatest physical actor, but I guess you don't become a Captain in the British Army by being a complete pussy. Moore could actually act though - check out The Man Who Haunted Himself

Another Bond who's said to be a bit of a hard man was Tim Dalton. Read he used to do a lot of his own stunts and the stunt crew rated him highly.

@victor-meldrew I've seen enough people in my time claim false Valor or embellished their careers to smell a rat from a mile away.

As it turns out I'm not alone.

Yes I've seen that travesty. Hard to believe it's the same actor that was such a presence in A Streetcar named Desire or so brilliantly portrayed Colonel Kurtz.

Perhaps he needed the money. The Willis-Cage effect?

It's the patter; bullshit claims of secrecy, avoidance of details, etc.

From personal experience, Lee sounds pretty normal to me.

My ex-FiL (WO1 in the REME) would talk about his military career pretty openly, but never, ever about his time in Oman in the early-70's. We only found out after his death he was involved with running transport for the Hereford folks.

PS: Niven's record is pretty well documented and he opened up about his war experiences just before he died. It was pretty horrific and the experiences haunted him all his life and that was the main reason he never talked about them.

I’m not sure if Lee was bullshitting or not. I’d like to think the latter.

I am sure he was a deadset cinematic legend though.

Speaking of legends here’s a story about the greatest of them all…..

Through extensive, exclusive interviews with Eastwood (and the friends and colleagues of a lifetime), Time magazine film critic Richard Schickel has penetrated a complex character who has always been understood too quickly, too superficially. He had an island to keep running, ironically.

But his acting/effort was the same he was just saved in the edit for Kurtz.

He was a great actor but incredibly lazy.

    Don't Look Up

Netflix's latest big star lineup revolving around 2 scientists and their attempts to bring a world-killing comet to the attention of the powers that be.

Most of the movie is a great satirical look at modern politics, society, and mainstream + social media. There are a lot of themes that apply to climate science of course, with the phrases "scientists all over the world agree that... " etc. The optics of the situation for a sitting president wth mid-terms elections are just around the corner, and so on.

DiCaprio, JLaw, Streep, Blanchett - pretty good lineup and they deliver. The guy who plays Teddy Oglethorpe is great as well. Ariana Grande's turn as a bimbo pop star was quite good as well. The tech billionaire I found hilarious. Ron Perlman's "hero" was LOL worthy.

A good watch and somewhat thought provoking about the things we already see wrong in society, whatever your political or social leanings. I think you can easily back it with this quote from Carl Sagan:

@nta it had a great premise for a 90min movie, unfortunately they went for another hour on top of that dilutes the message.

Did we really need a full Ariana Grande song?

Awesome cast that was completely wasted.

If it was 90 minutes, would that change your rating at all?

It would certainly dull the feeling of being hit repeatedly over the head with the same message over and over.

They repeated the “we are all going to die” tv show scene three times.

aside from Cosmic Sin, metioned above (as it was earlier than the bottom of this) here is a list of Bruce Willis' work in the past year and coming up...certainly going for quantity over quality, I mean the last 'box office' he was involved in was probably The Lego Movie 2 in 2019 (where he was himself)
