thread hijack but look what they've done to Albany Stadium. For a sport no one follows and a team that probably won't exist in 12 months

This was the redevelopment plan that was scuppered

@dogmeat removed seats no one was using anyway to try and scrape together a few extra dollars in the off season ? 😉

@dogmeat why would you do that to a stadium? It's not like people are actually going to attend to watch, so seats are unnecessary.

Not just removed seats. Full on earth removal to flatten / remove half an embankment.

        Madness.

Even without covid scuppering the baseball league. What an expensive and destructive option to take.

Northland has a rare Blues game this year. I hope that becomes the norm.

Albany games were pointless as it was. It’s hard to argue for Albany over Okara now

The crowds at the Tuatara games are probably comparable in size to those at the NH rugby games. NHS is more of a football ground now.

Would rather have them in Okara too, Albany was just a ghetto for Bok fans.

That was after the great Super Rugby betrayal. One NZRU's worst own-goals. Harbour used to have fanatical support.

Onewa Domain is a better location though.

Should have been converted to cricket.

15k is all we need for cricket games.

Eden Park is is literally putting an oval peg into a rectangle hole.

@nzzp Speedway didn't want a bar of it and then Akl cricket said they still wanted to use EP#2 as first choice.

It was part of the whole rationalisation plan for Akl stadia that did a good job of utilising the best facilities but totally ignored the desires of the teams involved - moving the Warriors to Albany the best example.

Is there enough room for a cricket oval at Albany now they've taken those seats out?

@duluth Minimum diameter for international cricket is 128 metres straight and 137 square.

The minimum length of the foul line in baseball is only 88 metres (thanks Google).

Given the stands at Albany were always close to the playing pitch I very much doubt it.

The outer oval was always intended to become a cricket ground using the stadiums facilities and corporate lounges. Build a fence around it and it would work.

Background of the Warehouse and westfield not exactly Pukekura Park or Queenstown Events Centre though

So they would need to buy the hockey field over the back

man, Albany was a proper rugby watching ground though. So few proper rugby watching stadia here - Albany, Waikato and Dunedin are the standouts. After that yuo're struggling.

It's a real pity - would love to see some baseball ,and it's not on. Would love to see some proper rugby at Albany, and it's only NH who play there (ooooh, burn!)

North Harbour should secede from the Super City.

At least our joke Mayor's (most of them TBF) were just harmless buffoons.

@nzzp Okara Park is a nice rectangle too, and one of the original plans for the rebuild of it, was to make it a rugby/cricket ground, but they went with just rugby leaving Cobham Oval next door.

yeah fair. I like Okara. For some reason though, I don't feel like the viewing is as good as Dunedin Hamilton North Harbour. Maybe I'm wrong,b ut just my take on it

I haven't been to Okara since it was redeveloped but the terraces weren't as close to the action as Albany

yeah - large walkway in front

NH has the steep eastern stand. It's superb; height really helps with live rugby. The old Millard Stand at Athletic Park did that brilliantly

I've sat in the top tier at Albany for sport (football) and a concert, and you get a great view.

It was said that the back row of the main stand at Albany was still closer to the touchline than any seat at Eden Par (pre RWC11). I can believe it. It was a fantastic viewing arena.

Had many great nighs there when even North Harbour would get 10K+ crowds
