Who handicaps these things?!! First race at Gosford just now, the 3 horse opens morning-line at 90-1, posttime is 4/5 and does what a 4/5 fave is supposed to do, win easily. See this every week and can’t believe a Gai Waterhouse maiden should ever open at 90 to one. Ridiculous!

Should not come as a surprise but still nice to see Sydney Morning Herald (behind a paywall) year-end honours and their horsie columnists are unanimous, their horse of the year VE, jock of the year J-Mac, trainer of the year CW, and Moment of the Year the 2021 Melbourne Cup. That is a kiwi clean sweep and sweet-as.

Another play I regularly make is a win bet on any kiwibred trained by nz-great John Sargent. He has a small stable at Randwick but a pretty good strike rate 14% and I bet a lot higher with his kiwibreds. Yesterday put $10 to win on Pink Ivory (NZ) at Gosford maiden, a second start, MLO was 40-1, I got him on the tote at 23-1 and paid $245. I had him in the 2nd leg of the quaddie too, and while I claimed two other legs, i missed the winner of the 3rd leg the feature race another 23-1 shot. 20-cent quaddie paid $4.4K. Sure would have liked to get a piece of that one.

The Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for 2021 were announced last night, and Verry Elleegant named world’s best mare, by some daylight. Congrats to all her connections!

@hooroo thanks mate. Thrill to be there (actually the first time I've been on course when a horse of mine has won). Slightly dusty today but well worth it.

            Congratulations!!!

            Now, what won and where?

Need You Now at the Harness Jewels yesterday.

And now she's a Group 2 winner! Entertaining race to watch (helped by the fact our horse won), and rectifies a curiosity in her record where she was a Group 1 winner but hadn't won any other Group or Listed races. She's now won 9 from 35, with 15 minor placings as well.

Remarkable or insane? I’ll be watching.

Cummings contender runs twice in 24 hours

THE Anthony Cummings-trained Secretively will take the term ‘quick back up’ to a whole new level when he contests the final event at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

That’s because the five-year-old gelding heads into the race fresh off a third placed finish in the last race at Canterbury Park on Friday night when beaten just under two lengths by the Gary Moore-trained Bergen.

Secretively’s Rosehill assignment on Saturday gets underway at 6.00pm while he contested the final event at Canterbury on Friday night at 9.30pm, meaning a mere 20 hours separates the in-form galloper’s two runs.

“It’s something I did a lot of with good success back in the day,” trainer Anthony Cummings said.

“He went over a few jumps this morning at home and is as bright as a daisy so there was no reason not to back him up. He’s a horse that really thrives on work and I wouldn’t back him up if I didn’t think he will be competitive.

“The way the race played out on Friday night there was still something left in the tank and he’s come through it great and is really full of himself this morning.”

The unorthodox approach for Secretively isn’t deterring punters from believing the son of Dawn Approach can be in the thick of things when the Precise Fire Benchmark 78 (1400m) gets underway late on Saturday afternoon.

After 9am race morning Secretively was a quick firmer, trimming up from $10 to $8 within minutes and his place in the market suggesting victory is well within the realms of possibility.

And there will be no concerns with leading jockey Tommy Berry familiarising himself with the galloper having steered him to his third placed finish at Canterbury less than 24 hours earlier.

2nd place! But the 51-1 winner killed me. 20-cent quaddie paid almost six-grand.

Big race in USA today, Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup, goes in a few hours.

Handicappers are calling it a 2-horse match race, and not giving any of the other 7 entrants a chance.

World’s #1 ranked best racehorse KNICKS GO (6/5) a 6yo having his last race before stud duty. He won this race last year. He also mopped-up the two most prestigious American Open races (Whitney Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic) ths past half-year. He will shortly be named 2021 Horse of the Year.

But he’s going up against LIFE IS GOOD (7/5) a 4yo by leading sire Into Mischief, and the prohibitive fave to be 2022 Horse of the Year. That’s the hype. He’s the defending Breeders Cup Mile champion, and a real monster who, like Knicks Go, completely crushes his fields.

Thing is they have never met, nor ever encountered another horse like the other. Both are early speed need-to-lead types who never trail at any sectional. Check the race form — Daily Racing Form Formulator for this race is today’s DRF Race of the Day, which means you can view that race-only without having to pay for it.

                    https://www.drf.com/formulator/pp-details/01-29-2022/GP/12/D/USA

Something’s got to give. This could be the pace meltdown of all pace meltdowns, and some longshot could make a punter a massive heap of money. This is the only race these two incredible animals, possibly the two best racehorses in the world, will ever meet.

No sentimental swansong for Knicks Go. This race was over out of the gate. Life Is Good is the new superstar of American racing. Had never run this far in his short career, but he just demolished the world’s top ranked horse over that horse’s preferred distance, and gave him no chance. Irad Ortiz was tickling and patting his mount down the last hundred yards. Seriously impressive.

Looks like Waller is going to ship VE to Paris for the Arc in October.

If she makes the gate, I will be making the trip to Longchamp.

Almost made it to the Arc a dozen years ago, but trip was cancelled. Never been to Longchamp. This year is the race’s 100th edition, and if VE makes the gate, win-or-lose I can’t find a better excuse to fly over to Paris for the weekend.

Great-great finish to the Lightning Stakes at Flemington just now. J-Mac jumps off defending champ Nature Strip — currently ranked world’s best sprinter — to get aboard Waller’s new star Home Affairs. Photo-finish. J-Mac is killing it at Flemington, again.

La Crique looks hard to beat in the NZ Derby after beating a very nice field. Needs a new Jock as Pay the Bills got suspended and isn't appealing.
