Rams committed to the run on first down but they are getting nothing.

So - I've been tempted for a while to try and get into, or at least understand, NFL... and I happen to be somewhere with Sky this week, so I'm giving the second half of this thing a go.
Some quick questions...
- What the fuck is going on? ie: what are the rules?
- I think I understand most of the basics, but then can't figure out how somebody even manages to ever run through/past the defensive line. But... I'm probably just over or under-estimating how hard it is to defend/attack.
- What I probably need to understand first up... what does "1st and 10" mean? And "2nd down"? etc.

- if I were to guess... they've got a certain number of yards they need to advance by?

- And a certain number of attempts to do so?
"1st" is the "1st attempt"?
And "2nd down" is the 2nd attempt?
And the number after that... is the yardage they need to get? Am I on the right track, or completely wrong?

They lost a great receiver
And their idiotic coach is ignoring their best receiver to keep giving the ball to a shit running back
But both defensive fronts are playing awesome
