It of course has nothing to do with Sharks recently. being bought by a US based private equity company. 🙄

    @nepia

It makes no sense from a sporting sense. It would become a mini World Cup every year for the teams that can win it apart from including the All Blacks. Devaluing the RWC and the TRC in the process.

Plus Italy are equal shareholders in the 6 nations company so it would have to be the 7 nations as if they tried to replace Italy, there would be outrage and probably years of litigation to follow.

Then we keep hearing about the traditions of the 6 nations. This would throw that out of the window completely.

Typical periodic sabre rattling by a group of saffas that don't speak for SARFU

Do the 6N actually want the Boks?

Also, WR would be stupid to weaken the other strong competition - it's not good for international rugby, which they're supposed to be in charge of.

WR have no say in who is in RC or 6N, so that's irrelevant. I would imagine that investment group that brought a chunk of the 6N would be very keen to have the boks in

They are the governing body that sanction the competition. If the World Rugby Council thought it was detrimental to the game they could block the Boks from joining, they could withhold WC funding etc.

@kiwimurph same issues are still there: travel (and travelling fans), and playing summer/winter, and the strength of SA.

Durban is typically 29 degrees in January. You're going to take peopel from the snow, put them on a plane for at least 11 hours (to get to JoBurg), then get them to play in mid 20 degree heat. Can't see the athletes loving it, frankly.

Still, SA has money, so there's that.

Also, I'll believe it when I see it. This keeps getting floated, I'm still to be convinced it would fly

I also read that the SANZAAR CEO has hinted at wanting to play the RC earlier in the year to align with the 6N. No way that works with the summer weather and no rugby being played at that time in the SH.

you're not wrong but it becomes a question of whats worse, those factors or doing even longer flights and having huge jet lag and having inconvenient times for games

To clarify: I don't think that's a worry for SA; I think it will be front of mind for the 6N (aka rivers of gold)

How does that work for the EOYT? If SA are effectively on a NH calendar and playing the 6N wouldn't that mean there is one less viable touring team and one more host demanding Tier 1 opponents?

unless they stay on the end of year tour away - and host in June

Edit: and play their comps between Nov and June, rather than June and Nov. Hell, it kinda lines up with what Super is now (played in that window)

Would Australia, NZ or Argentina be willing to undertake an away tour in June? They would need to otherwise they would never play them.

Really? No, cos Super rugby pre season starts same time as 6N - so perfectly able to play same dates. Not saying it is a good idea, but it is certainly possible

We need a Pacific comp with Japan & US. Otherwise we are circling the drain and may as well jump ship to League.

Still think Boks to 6N is a bad and unpopular idea, but money talks louder.

So that makes pre season for pre season even earlier...

im coming around to this idea....but we need more than that otherwise will just end up with an italy in the 6N, i think if we do that then we need a club comp underneath it to bring up the level of rugby in those countries

so, straight in to test rugby with the players getting almost no break, and then training as the stepping stone

    Sounds ideal...
