Healy ( who I thought was a bit of a dick before this comment ) might want to time his comments better but I don’t think he’s saying anything untrue.

    Spot on.

My first response was about heart disease being a massive killer for middle aged men, but deleted as it was too soon.

Healy probably knew him well, but it's landed with a clang. That said, male Ferners look after yourselves, eat clean, drink in moderation and keep exercising. Do as I say not as I do basically

    Get the fuck outta here.

When I commented to a mate that Warneys death would likely cause many a middle-aged Aussie to take better care of themselves, he made the point that that's probably exactly what Warney wouldn't want.

    Keep living fellas!

Absolutely this. Furthermore If anything his manager claiming Warne had this good clean lifestyle is doing more damage cos we all read it and scream ‘bullshit’.

Similar principle to the Mum who’s son has been convicted of murder but she says ‘he’s a good boy really’

His mum gave him the illegal drug he got banned for, remember?

Ooooooo good point. Also didn’t he lose it when some kids took a photo of him smoking ?

Proved what a legend he is that none of this detracted from his amazing deeds and standing within the game.

He was taking "Chinese Medicine and things like that" for his most recent weight loss. That's a red flag right there.

It took longer than I thought. Sunil's world view is centred around the subcontinent, particularly India where Warne didn't do nearly as well as anywhere else.

                Kumble was very good

Kumble was shit away from home. He regularly got spanked on anything that wasn't a dustbowl gifted to him by Indian curators in the pay of the BCCI.

but Muralis numbers are absolutely ridiculous. 67 Michelles and TWENTY TWO 10 fers !!!!!

They are ridiculous. So ridiculous they changed the Laws to accomodate him.

Yeah most experts rate Warnie as being better than Murali. He is still a legend provided we accept his action is legit though.

I suppose competing for wickets with Chaminda Vaas was easier than Glenn McGrath so his numbers look even more exceptional.

Warne also took 195 more Ashes wickets than Murali. That speaks volumes.

I've read so many nice columns over the weekend

but i think this paragraph is as good as any for the majority of punters

“Bowling, Shane” can be heard countrywide on a Saturday or Sunday, usually with ironic overtones as some poor b*stard decided to copy Warne 20 years ago and take up the hardest skill in cricket, only to be pumped into the car park on a weekly basis. That same person plays for that very occasional genuine “bowling, Shane”. We all do. Partly because amateur cricketers at one point dreamed of being as good as Warne, but just as much because they want to be considered a decent, fun bloke. It’s was his character that appealed as much as anything.

We had a pretty small back yard growing up, and I can remember my brother and I spending countless hours bowling Shane Warne style leggies at each other. We even roughed up the grass to create some footmarks to aim for. Throughout his career he inspired kids everywhere to give it a go instead of always trying to bowl as fast as we possibly could. He definitely made leg spin cool, I don't think you can overstate the impact he had on the game.

I could never get the hang of all his variations, but my brother actually got pretty good at it and became a spin bowler, taking a few 5-fors emulating Warnes action.

The control Warne had while putting so much turn on the ball was just out of this world. Some of my first memories of NZ v Aus are of him absolutely terrorising our batsmen. I hated the fluffybunny for being so damn good, which is the highest form of respect fans can give an opposition player.

RIP and thanks for all of the memories. A true great of the game.

Yeah he was unique which made him arguably the best player of his generation. In that aspect the only one who in my opinion comes close is Gilly, no keeper is supposed to bat as well as he did.

... and McGrath, Lee and all the other fast bowlers who it turns out straighten their arms.

Murali is nothing if not divisive - people drop into black and white veeery quickly. So probably better leave it for when the rugby season's done 🙂

They are ridiculous. So ridiculous they changed the Laws to accomodate him.

... and McGrath, Lee and all the other fast bowlers who it turns out straighten their arms.

Murali is nothing if not divisive - people drop into black and white veeery quickly. So probably better leave it for when the rugby season's done 🙂

incredibly hard to do what he did, bowling with rubber arms and dropping it on teh spot

                              but a massive cheat

loving all the Warnie magic videos being shown

That 1999 CWC semi final might be the most Shane Warne moment ever though. Aussies have a shit total, South Africa are cruising. Up steps warnie, takes 3 quick wickets, completely fucks the South Africans heads, and Australia go on to win. Force of personality as much as skill won that.

See, like I said. Divisive. Never let the facts get in the way of perception.

Anyway, its' all done now, probably not the thread to derail.

@nzzp Warne said Murali's action was legitimate so who are we to argue.

It’s was his character that appealed as much as anything.

haha that’s classic. I never tried the Warnie, because I was too busy trying my Hadlee, Malcolm Marshal and Merv Hughes impressions, but anyone that tried it on me my eyes lit up because that thing was going for 6

                                        Murali’s action was cleared wasn’t it ?

I also never realised he was a Rugby player too.

Having him on the mike for BBL games really showed just how fantastic a thinking he was. He'd often tell the commentators what his plan for the next couple of balls were and then execute it perfectly and get the wicket exactly as predicted. Aussie probably missed a trick by never making him captain.

But the memory that I'll remember best is rigor catching him on 99 off a vettori no ball than wasn't called. He was a guy you loved to hate and see fail because he was so damn good and it happened so rarely.

Murali was better than him on the subcontinent but anywhere else is the world Warne was the goat. He's probably the second name on the all time teamsheet behind Bradman.
