…and The Deer Hunter is overrated.
You’ve let yourself down there
I let myself down when I sat through it.
There's a reason Cimino nearly brought down an entire film studio.

I was amazed at how few films he’s directed, considering he’s always thought of as a Hollywood heavyweight. Not much there for the neutral either. The Deer Hunter would have been a great film if was a hell of a lot shorter. Thunderbolt & Lightfooot was an amusing romp, but aside from those two - sheesh!

I think Heavens Gate probably wrecked his career/reputation with the studios

Undoubtedly, but according to IMDB that was only his third gig as Director. Where does he get his rep from?

Amazing he only directed 8 films. Can only think he was a bit of an arsehole but The Deer Hunter made people forgive that as the dollars were rolling-in.

Cimino seemed only concerned about how a movie looked, not the plot or character development. His films were inevitably too long. Way too long for audiences to entertain.
I thought when it was released that The Deerhunter was over-praised - the symbolism was arch and totally lacking in subtlety. Still it struck a chord - the war was only just over, America was struggling to accept defeat and was looking to lay blame but not against the poor grunts. The least of the late 70's Vietnam triptych IMO

Decent buddy movie. Clint and Jeff Bridges had terrific chemistry. Not sure how much of that was down to the director !
@Nepia is probably right, the Deer Hunter could have done without that wedding scene ( or at least had it considerably shortened ) at the start.

@catogrande said in Movie review thread...:
From memory the wedding scene was about 75% of the film - or certainly felt like it.
Haven’t seen it in years but I think it was split into thirds from memory. Wedding/Hunting, Vietnam, return to US/back to Vietnam to finish……..
All this talk about it has definitely made me want to see it again.

John Wick
Wow. What a rush. I loved the style, the action was almost non stop once it kicked off, the violence was extreme like a video game. Keanu did great with more brooding and less dialogue. 5 dead puppies out of 5 dead Russian gangsters
Three John Wick movies is not enough.
Why are they wearing body condoms?

It's definitely no Godfather wedding scene.
Of his films I remember liking Year of the Dragon as a teen, but then again I rated The Deer Hunter higher as a teen too.

For those wondering why Bruce Willis was pumping out B/C-grade movies in recent years, he was obviously cashing in while he could.
I prefer to remember the good ‘uns, there were a few

@bovidae was it panned by the public? i always remember enjoying it
Yep was a bomb and derided by critics. I really enjoyed it.
